Mammoths Open Spring Break Trip with Weather-Shortened 5-2 win over Babson

AUBURNDALE, Fla.—Sophomore Aiden Dubetsky went 2-for-4 with a double and scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fifth as Amherst College defeated Babson College, 5-2, in a game shortened to six innings because of lightning on Sunday afternoon at Lake Myrtle Park.

Amherst improves to 4-1 while Babson slips to 2-4 on the young season. The Mammoths are back in action Monday when they face the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse at 6:15 p.m. at Northeast Regional Park, Field 3, in Davenport, Fla.

Sophomore JJ Grimes was 2-for-3 with a double in support of classmate Nick Fasserst who struck out five and gave up just two hits over four innings. First-year Saahi Jetti gave up two runs on three hits over two innings out of the bullpen and improved to 2-0 with the win for the Mammoths.

Neither pitcher allowed a hit over the first two frames and the game remained scoreless until first-year Jack Darcy drove in sophomore Justin Orridgewith a one-out single to right and then scored on an RBI ground out by first-year Zander Carnahan to put Amherst in front 2-0. Babson answered back in the top of the fifth though, as D'Avanzo ripped a double down the left field line to plate Teator and sophomore Dylan Drazka followed with a ground out to second to score Laforest to make it 2-2.

The Mammoths went back on top in the fifth as Dubetsky led off with a double and scored from second when sophomore Leo Foust reached on an error. Foust later scored on a two-out single by junior Charlie LaFreniere  for a 4-2 lead. Jetti worked out of a bases-loaded jam with a strikeout and a pop up in the top of the sixth and Amherst tacked on another run in the bottom of the inning before the game was halted and later called due to lightning in the area.
