Mammoths Edged by Tufts, 49–44

MEDFORD, MA —

The Amherst College women's basketball team traveled to Medford, Massachusetts, on Friday night to face Tufts University and found themselves in a tightly contested battle from start to finish. After jumping out to an early advantage, the Mammoths weathered several momentum swings and made a late push, but were ultimately unable to close the gap, falling to the Jumbos, 49–44.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Amherst came out sharp in the opening quarter, opening the game on a 10–0 run and holding Tufts scoreless for the first five-and-a-half minutes. The Mammoths controlled the tempo early and finished the quarter with a 12–4 lead.

  • In the second quarter, Amherst built the lead to 10 within the first five minutes of play, but Tufts responded with a three-pointer and several layups to cut the deficit to one. The Mammoths headed into halftime holding a narrow 19–18 advantage.

  • Amherst struck first in the third quarter, scoring the opening basket and adding free throws to regain a five-point advantage. Tufts answered midway through the quarter, tying the game behind free throws and a key three-pointer before seizing momentum. The Jumbos finished the quarter on an 11–0 run, taking a 10-point lead into the final quarter.

  • Tufts maintained control early in the fourth quarter, extending their margin to 12. Amherst refused to fade, generating momentum through fast-break opportunities and a timely three-pointer from Reagan Pahl. The Mammoths cut the deficit to just two with 41 seconds remaining, but were unable to convert on their final possessions. With Amherst forced to foul down the stretch, Tufts capitalized at the free-throw line to close out the 49–44 victory.

BY THE NUMBERS:

  • Laura Mendell led the Mammoths with 11 points, followed by Chase Anderson with 10 points.

  • Elizabeth Cain led the Mammoths on the glass with 9 rebounds, including 6 offensive boards.

  • As a team, Amherst out-rebounded Tufts, 38–34.

UP NEXT:

  • The loss moves Amherst to a 15-6 overall record (4–3 in NESCAC play).

  • The Mammoths will look to bounce back tomorrow, Saturday, February 7, on the road against Connecticut College at 3 p.m.
