Mammoths Narrowly Fall to #7 Nationally Ranked Bowdoin College, 57–52

BRUNSWICK, ME —

Coming off a win from the night before, the Amherst College women's basketball team took on NESCAC leader and No. 7 nationally ranked Bowdoin College on Saturday afternoon. In a game that featured constant momentum shifts and multiple lead changes, the Mammoths briefly pulled ahead in the second half but were unable to close out the contest, falling 57–52. The loss snapped Amherst's six-game winning streak.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Amherst and Bowdoin exchanged baskets for much of the opening quarter, with the score staying tight until Bowdoin gained a slight edge late in the quarter. The quarter finished with Bowdoin leading 13–11.

  • In the second quarter, Bowdoin began to create separation, pushing the lead to eight midway through the quarter. Amherst responded with renewed energy, clawing back to keep the game within reach. A timely three-pointer from Brielle Renwick tied the game at 28–28 with just over a minute remaining in the quarter. Bowdoin, however, closed the half with two baskets in the final minute, taking a 32–28 lead into halftime.

  • Amherst came out strong after halftime, finding their rhythm on both ends of the floor. Aggressive defense fueled their offense, and four minutes into the third quarter, the Mammoths surged ahead with the help of baskets from Elizabeth Cain and Laura Mendell, along with a three-pointer from Reagan Pahl. Amherst later stretched their advantage to seven with under three minutes remaining in the quarter, highlighted by another Pahl three-pointer. Bowdoin answered late in the quarter, though, trimming the margin to two as Amherst entered the fourth ahead 43–41.

  • Bowdoin regained control early in the final quarter by attacking inside, reclaiming the lead just two minutes in. The fourth quarter featured multiple momentum swings, and although Bowdoin briefly extended the margin to six, Pahl connected on her fourth three-pointer of the game to cut the deficit to three with 58 seconds remaining. However, Amherst was unable to convert on their final offensive opportunities, and Bowdoin closed out the game at the free-throw line to secure the 57–52 win.

  • Olivia Soenens led the Mammoths on the glass with 7 rebounds, followed by Elizabeth Cain with 5.
