Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Second-Half Surge Leads Mammoths to 66–59 Win Over Colby

WATERVILLE, ME —

The Amherst College women's basketball team showed resilience on Friday night, rallying from an early deficit to defeat Colby College 66–59. After struggling to find their rhythm in the opening half, the Mammoths made key adjustments after the break, taking control in the fourth quarter to secure their sixth straight victory.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Amherst faced early challenges in the opening quarter, as Colby's full-court pressure disrupted the Mammoths' offense. Difficulty breaking the press led to turnovers and prevented Amherst from finding their offensive rhythm. The first quarter finished with the Mammoths trailing 23–13.

  • The Mammoths settled in during the second quarter, trimming the deficit to five midway through the quarter. However, Colby responded with another run fueled by steals and transition layups, pushing the lead back to nine and sending Amherst into halftime trailing 31–22.

  • The second half marked a turning point. Although Colby opened the third quarter with the first basket, Amherst answered immediately, scoring the next two and beginning a steady climb back into the game. Improved ball movement and better execution against the press allowed the Mammoths to attack inside and chip away at the lead. By the end of the quarter, Amherst had cut the deficit to five, trailing 47–42.

  • Amherst carried that momentum into the fourth quarter and wasted little time before seizing control of the game. The Mammoths took the lead just two minutes into the final quarter and continued to build separation, stretching the advantage to eight with under three minutes remaining. Despite Colby's efforts to respond, Amherst remained composed, protecting the ball and coming up with key defensive stops down the stretch to close out the 66–59 win.

BY THE NUMBERS:

  • Chase Anderson led the Mammoths with 17 points and dominated the glass with 16 rebounds.

  • Amherst shot 51.1% from the field, 41.7% from three-point range, and 75.0% from the free-throw line.

UP NEXT:

  • This win improves Amherst's overall record to 15–4 (4–1 against NESCAC opposition).

  • The Mammoths will return to action on the road tomorrow at 3 p.m. when they face NESCAC leader and No. 7 nationally ranked Bowdoin College.
