AMHERST, MA – The Amherst College men's basketball team improved to a 10-0 record at home this season as the Mammoths rallied to defeat Hamilton College 65-37 on Saturday afternoon at LeFrak Gymnasium.
Amherst improved to 13-5 overall and 2-2 in NESCAC play, while Hamilton fell to 5-13 on the season and 1-3 in the conference. The Mammoths will host Colby College next, who they'll face back in LeFrak Gymnasium on Friday at 7 p.m.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
*Senior Garret Keyhani led off scoring in the opening possession with a three-pointer from the top of the arch at 19:39 remaining. After three scoreless minutes, Junior Jack Stowell followed up with a layup at 6:17 to give the Continentals a 5-0 lead.
*Senior Chris Hammond and first-year Sherron Woodberry partnered up to push Amherst into the lead in the following minute, netting back-to-back three-pointers to take the lead, 6-5.
*The Mammoths maintained their offensive prowess in the final ten minutes of the half, driving a 20-2 streak highlighted by two three-pointers from Woodberry and one from first-year K.J. Neville. Senior Drew Martin joined in, bucketing three layups across the stretch to help the Mammoths close the half 28-9.
*Hamilton's defensive unit heated up in the second half, relegating the Mammoths to ten points from foul-shooting across eight minutes of play.
*Neville fed to junior Zane Adnan at the left wing to add three points with 11:58 to play, but the Continentals quickly responded on the return as first-year Alister Walsh answered with his own three to extend the contest to 42-21.
*Sophomore Elias Chin led off a 7-0 drive from Amherst between 6:16 and 5:05 with two back-to-back layups. The guard then passed to junior Marc Garraud on the return, bucketing a three from the left wing to push Amherst's lead to 57-31.
*Junior Johnny McCain added to the Mammoths' tally in the contest's final minute with an emphatic three from the center. Sophomore Rob Cain answered with a layup in the closing 13 seconds, but the effort was not enough to overcome Amherst's lead as the game settled to 65-37.
BY THE NUMBERS:
*Amherst held the offensive advantage, converting 40% 20-50) of field goals compared to Hamilton's 30% (15-50), 35.7% (10-28) of three-pointers compared to 13.6% (3-22), and 65.2% (15-23) of free throws compared to 40% (4-10).
*Chin was the game's leading scorer, netting 13 points. Garraud and Woodberry followed behind with 13 and 9, respectively.
