Soenens’ 21-Point Performance Lifts Mammoths to 71–51 Victory

AMHERST, MA —

The Amherst College women's basketball team returned to LeFrak Gymnasium on Monday night to face Western New England University and delivered a dominant performance from start to finish. Behind strong ball movement and efficient perimeter shooting, the Mammoths took an early lead and steadily built on it throughout the night, cruising to a decisive 71–51 victory.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Although the first quarter remained close early on, Amherst took control in the final minutes. The Mammoths closed the quarter on a 10–0 run, highlighted by a jumper from Elizabeth Cain and three-pointers from Laura Mendell and Reagan Pahl, to finish the quarter ahead 19–9.

  • Amherst continued to extend their lead in the second quarter, building an advantage as large as 16 points. However, Western New England fought back to bring the game within 12 points heading into halftime, with Amherst leading 35–23.

  • The Mammoths put the game away in the third quarter with a dominant offensive performance. Amherst went on a 20–0 run midway through the quarter, fueled by lights-out shooting from first-year Olivia Soenens, who knocked down five three-pointers in less than five minutes. Chase Anderson also added a key three during the run, and Amherst closed the quarter with a commanding 34-point advantage.

  • Amherst continued to play unselfish, team-oriented basketball in the fourth quarter, closing out the contest strong to secure the 71–51 win.

BY THE NUMBERS:

  • Olivia Soenens led the Mammoths with a career-high 21 points.

  • Amherst controlled the glass, out-rebounding Western New England 49–35.

  • Overall, the Mammoths shot 45.0% from the field, 42.3% from the 3-point line, and 75.0% from the free-throw line.

UP NEXT:

  • With the win, Amherst now improves to a 12–4 overall record (2–1 in NESCAC play).

  • The Mammoths will look to extend their three-game winning streak on Wednesday, January 21st, when they travel to Williamstown, Massachusetts, to face Williams College at 7 p.m.
