Mammoths Edge Williams on the Road, 63–57

WILLIAMSTOWN, MA —

The Amherst College women's basketball team earned a hard-fought road victory on Wednesday night, grinding out a 63–57 win over Williams College. In a tightly contested matchup that featured multiple momentum swings, the Mammoths created just enough separation in the second half and executed down the stretch to come away with the win.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

  • The opening quarter saw both teams trade baskets, but Amherst closed out the quarter with a brief surge. A 6–0 run late in the quarter, sparked by strong post moves from Elizabeth Cain, gave the Mammoths an 18–12 edge after the first 10 minutes of play.

  • Williams responded in the second quarter, gradually chipping away at the deficit and tying the game with just over two minutes remaining in the quarter. Amherst answered at the free-throw line in the closing moments of the half, taking a slim one-point lead into halftime (26-25).

  • The third quarter remained tight until a pivotal stretch late in the quarter. With just over a minute remaining, Chase Anderson drilled a three-pointer, followed by another from Reagan Pahl on the Mammoths' next possession. The back-to-back threes provided a momentum shift and sent Amherst into the fourth quarter up 48–42.

  • Williams continued to push in the final quarter, but Amherst maintained control. The Mammoths extended their advantage to 10 points with just under three minutes remaining with the help of timely defensive stops. Key steals from Chase Anderson and Laura Mendell helped Amherst protect the lead, and after Williams cut the margin to five in the final 30 seconds, Mendell calmly knocked down three free throws to seal the 63–57 victory.

BY THE NUMBERS:

  • Elizabeth Cain led the Mammoths with 20 points, marking a season high for her.

  • Amherst had active hands on defense throughout the whole game, recording 11 steals to William's 8.
