Mammoths Find Their Rhythm in 61–50 Win Over Trinity

AMHERST, MA — The Amherst College women's basketball team earned a 61–50 home win over Trinity College on Friday night. The victory marked a return to form for the Mammoths, who had dropped their previous three games. Amherst controlled the game from the opening quarter and remained composed despite a second-half push from the Bantams, securing the win and building momentum for the rest of the season.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

  • The Mammoths set the tone early with a three-pointer from Olivia Soenens on the team's first possession, and while both teams scored consistently throughout the quarter, Amherst finished the quarter with a 16–12 lead.

  • In the second quarter, Amherst built momentum on the offensive end to widen the gap. Reagan Pahl, Laura Mendell, and Anna Tranum helped fuel the scoring as Amherst built a double-digit advantage heading into halftime, leading 35–24.

  • Amherst pushed its lead to 14 early in the third quarter, but Trinity answered with made free throws and open three-pointers to cut into the margin. The Mammoths still held a 43–35 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

  • The Mammoths opened the fourth quarter by rebuilding their lead to 11, but the Bantams chipped away again and brought the game within just two points with only 3:19 remaining. However, Amherst capitalized at the free-throw line in the final minutes, knocking down key shots to pull away and close out the 61–50 win.

BY THE NUMBERS:

  • Laura Mendell recorded a double-double with 18 points (including 3 three-pointers) and 10 rebounds.

  • Chase Anderson made a strong impact defensively, recording six blocks.

  • The Mammoths outshot the Bantams from beyond the arc, 44.4% to Trinity's 27.3%.

  • With the win, Amherst improves to a 10–4 overall record.

  • The Mammoths will look to get another win at home tomorrow, January 17th, when they face Wesleyan University at 3 p.m. in LeFrak Gymnasium.
