Mammoths Unable to Complete Comeback in 83–76 Loss to Coast Guard

NEW LONDON, CT —

The Amherst College women's basketball team battled back from a sizable deficit on Tuesday night but ultimately fell 83–76 to the United States Coast Guard Academy. Trailing by 15 at halftime, the Mammoths steadily chipped away throughout the second half and brought the game within five points in the closing moments, but were unable to complete the comeback before time expired.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

  • The opening quarter featured an evenly matched battle, with both teams trading baskets through the first seven minutes of play. Coast Guard gained momentum late in the quarter, knocking down three three-pointers in the final three minutes to build a double-digit advantage. The Bears closed out the first quarter ahead 26–16.

  • Amherst worked to chip away at the deficit in the second quarter, but Coast Guard maintained control for much of the quarter. In the final minutes before halftime, the Bears extended their lead, sending the teams into the break with Coast Guard up 45–30.

  • The Mammoths came out of halftime with renewed urgency in the third quarter. Amherst trimmed the lead to just seven points with 1:52 remaining in the quarter, bringing the game back within striking distance. Coast Guard responded, however, knocking down two late three-pointers to push the lead back to 13 heading into the fourth quarter.

  • Amherst continued its push in the fourth quarter, applying pressure defensively and forcing turnovers that led to key scoring opportunities. The Mammoths brought the game within five points with 15 seconds remaining, but were unable to convert on their final offensive possessions. Forced to foul, Amherst sent Coast Guard to the free-throw line, where the Bears sealed the game with made free throws, securing the 83–76 victory.

BY THE NUMBERS:

  • Chase Anderson led the Mammoths with 19 points, followed by Laura Mendell with 14.

  • Amherst held a 43–35 advantage on the boards, with 24 of those rebounds coming on the offensive end, while Coast Guard had just 8 offensive rebounds.

  • Overall, the Mammoths shot 36.6% from the field, 23.1% from the 3-point line, and 64.3% from the free-throw line.

UP NEXT:

  • The loss moves Amherst to a 9–4 overall (0–1 in NESCAC play).

  • The Mammoths will look to bounce back on Friday, January 16, as they host Trinity College at 7 p.m. in LeFrak Gymnasium.
