#23 Mammoths use fast start to blank Bates, 2-0

AMHERST, Mass. – A dominant opening stretch lifted the No. 23-ranked Amherst College women's soccer team to a 2-0 shutout victory over Bates College on Saturday, Sept. 27, at Hitchcock Field.

With two first-half goals and a staunch defensive performance, the Mammoths extended their unbeaten streak to four matches and improved to 6-1-1 on the season. Bates drops to 2-5 with the loss.

Amherst will look to continue its winning momentum as it hosts Colby on Sunday, Sept. 28, at Hitchcock Field. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

  • The Mammoths wasted no time getting on the board, scoring just over four minutes into the match. A short corner from sophomore Caroline Coletti found senior Ella "LJ" Johnson, who lofted a cross to the far post. Senior Sophia Haynes got on the end of it, netting her first goal of the season and putting Amherst ahead 1-0.
  • Amherst doubled its advantage just six minutes later after a defensive miscue by Bates. Junior Jessica Lomo intercepted a wayward pass and immediately fed first-year standout Emma Darling streaking down the left wing. Darling drove to the end line and delivered a perfectly placed aerial cross to Coletti, who buried the finish for her first goal of the season and a 2-0 Mammoths lead.
  • Amherst continued to press throughout the match, creating numerous chances from set pieces and wide areas. In the 66th minute, Katie Pedersen forced a strong save from the Bates goalkeeper, and in the 69th, Ani Populoh nearly extended the lead with another well-timed attempt.
  • Bates' best opportunity came in the 79th minute when Zoe Mittelsteadt struck the crossbar, but the Mammoths' back line held firm to preserve the shutout                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                BY THE NUMBERS:
