Mammoths' season ends with extra-inning quarterfinal loss to Trinity, 9-8

AMHERST, Mass. -- Andrew Park's solo home run to right field with two outs in the top of the 10th inning lifted the Trinity College baseball team to a 9-8, 10-inning victory over the Amherst College baseball team Saturday morning on Memorial Field.

The win gave Trinity a two-game sweep of the best-of-three NESCAC Tournament quarterfinal series with Amherst, which saw its season conclude wit a 18-16 record. The Bantams, at 20-15, move on to the four-team double-elimination portion of the tournament next week in Brunswick, Maine.

Park's home run spoiled a valiant comeback effort by Amherst, which rallied from an early 4-1 deficit and a late 8-5 debt to send the game into an extra frame.

GAME HIGHLGHTS:

* Trinity took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on an RBI-single by Park and a sacrifice fly from Will Sawyer.

* Amherst got one back in its half of the first without the benefit of a basehit. With Aiden Dubetsky (hit by a pitch) on third and Jack Sampedro (walk) on first, the Mammoths executed a double steal, with Dubetsky stealin home on the play to make it 2-1.

* It was 4-1 entering the bottom of the fourth and Trinity starter Brendan Grady, a crafty left-hander, was in control. But with two outs and no one on, Justin Orrdge ignited a rally with a single to right field. Jack McDermott followed with a single up the middle to chase Orridge to third. J.J. Grimes was up next, and with the hit & run on, he shot a double to center field that scored both runners and made it a 4-3 game. Senior Jack Boyle then lined a single to center to score Grimes with the tying run. Boyle then stole second and third, scoring when the throw to third was wild, giving Amherst a 5-4 lead.

* Trinity answered immediately with two runs in the top of the fifth to regain the lead at 6-5, then scored single runs in the sixth and eighth for a three-run lead and only six out to go.

* Amherst spoiled that plan, however, greeting Bantam reliever Andruw Perez with three runs to tie the game in the bottom of th eighth. McIntyre got things started with he launched Perez's second pitch to straightaway center for a solo home run that made it 8-6. LaFreniere drew a walk and Justin Orridge reached on a throwing error. Perez rallied to retire the next two Mammoths, but Boyle lofted a deep fly to center that eluded the Bantam fielder at the last moment and went for a two-run double and tied the game, 8-8.

* Sampedro came on to pitch the ninth and escaped a first-and-second, nobody-out-jam, ending the frame with a strikeout. But Perez retired the final seven batters he faced and with two outs in the 10th, Park hit a ball over the right field fence despite the best efforts from LaFreniere, who leaped high and flipped over the fence only to have the ball elude his glove.

BY THE NUMBERS:

* Boyle was 2 for 4 with 3 RBI, a run scored, and two stolen bases in the loss.

* E.J. Nevills started and threw 4 innings, allowing four runs, all earned, while walking five and striking out four. He gave up four hits. Yoon Chae tossed an inning, allowing two runs, Wellsley De Oliveira Jr.  threw two frames, Tyson Luna one and Sampedro two. Each of those three allowed one run each.
