Fifteen Mammoths earn USTFCCCA Outdoor All-Region accolades

NEW ORLEANS – The Amherst College men's track and field team posted top-five regional performances in 13 events during the outdoor season as 15 Mammoths earned Mideast Outdoor All-Region honors from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

USTFCCCA awards All-Region honors to the top five individuals in each event from each region, as well as each member of the region's top three relay teams over the course of the outdoor season prior to the NCAA Championships. The Mideast Region is one of 10 regions across the country and consists of 26 institutions in western Massachusetts, eastern New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island and Vermont.

First-year Gavin Schmidt (Swarthmore, Pa.) registered the top regional performance in the shot put.

All-Region accolades were also earned by junior Cody Pierce (Linwood, N.J.) in the 400m, sophomore Parker Boyle (Hong Kong) in the 800m, sophomore Stan Craig (Richmond, Va.) in the 5000m, sophomore Harrison Talcott (Portland, Ore.) in the steeplechase, sophomore Michael Abbey Jr. (Yonkers, N.Y.) in the high jump and triple jump, sophomore Alec Kuzyk (Montclair, N.J.) in the pole vault, sophomore Kaleb Barrett (Falmouth, Maine) in the long jump, Schmidt in the discus, senior David Brown (Syosset, N.Y.) in the discus, junior Charlie Spurrell (Cranston, R.I.) in the hammer, the Amherst 4x100m relay team of first-year Kean Tanyi-Tang (Urbana, Md.), Pierce, junior Alexander Nichols (Rye, N.Y.), junior Jordan Harrison (Solon, Ohio), and the Mammoth 4x400m relay team of senior Jai Dreher (Metuchen, N.J.), junior Ben Davis (New York, N.Y.), Tanyi-Tang, and Pierce.

A dominant athlete in the throwing events this season, Schmidt produced the top regional performance in the shot put during the NESCAC Championship where the rookie broke an 85-year-old program record in the shot put throwing a mark of 15.91m. Schmidt also earned an All-Region honor in the discus as the Swarthmore, Pa. native posted the second furthest distance in the discus with a mark of 50.95m at the New England Division III Championships which established a new program record. This marks three career All-Region honors as Schmidt wraps up his rookie year. 

Pierce racked up All-Region accolades in three events. He posted the fifth-fastest time in the 400m with a time of 47.96 at the MIT Final Qualifier meet and was part of Amherst's 4x100m and 4x400m relay teams that both ranked second in the Mideast. Pierce now has 15 All-Region awards to his name. 

Tanyi-Tang, Nichols, and Harrison joined Pierce on the 4x100m relay team that ranks second in the Mideast clocking in a time of 41.49 seconds at the Amherst Spring Fling. Harrison wraps up his junior season with eight career All-Region accolades while Nichols finishes the season with three career All-Region performances. 

The 4x400m relay team of Dreher, Davis, Tanyi-Tang, and Pierce delivered the second fastest time in the region as the quartet established a new program record of 3:12.77 at the Farley Inter-Regional Extravaganza at Williams. Davis concludes his third season with the Mammoths tallying 10 career All-Region awards while Dreher graduates with three career All-Region honors and Tanyi-Tang finishes his rookie season with three All-Region accolades. 

Boyle's performance of 1:50.43 in the 800m was the third fastest time in the Mideast as the sophomore notched his season best at the NESCAC Championship, concluding his second season with the Mammoths with four career All-Region awards. 

Craig emerged as one of the Mammoths top distance runners as the sophomore set a new program record in the 5000m, clocking in a time of 14:12.35 at the Farley Inter-Regional Extravaganza which ranks second in the region. This marks Craig's first All-Region honor. 

Talcott earned his first All-Region accolade as the sophomore recorded the fourth fastest time in the 3000m steeplechase, finishing in 9:27.29 at the Amherst Spring Fling. 

Abbey Jr. finished the outdoor season with two All-Region awards as the sophomore ranked third in the Mideast in both the high jump and triple jump. In the high jump, Abbey Jr. jumped a height of 1.98m at the Amherst Spring Fling while posting a mark of 14.22m in the triple jump at the NESCAC Championship. This marks five career All-Region honors for the Yonkers, N.Y. native. 

Kuzyk broke a 48-year-old program record in the pole vault at the Amherst Spring Fling, setting the new record to 4.60m and ranking fifth in the Mideast and collecting his third career All-Region award. 

Barrett delivered a mark of 7.06m in the long jump at the NESCAC Championship which marks as the fifth-longest jump in the region and garnering his first All-Region accolade.

Wrapping up his career with eight All-Region honors, Brown's throw of 45.94m from the Farley Inter-Regional Extravaganza ranks fourth in the Mideast. 

Spurrell capped his junior season with six career All-Region awards as the Cranston, R.I. native produced the third furthest distance in the region in the hammer with a mark of 54.89m at the Amherst Spring Fling. 

The Mammoths finished the outdoor season ranked third in the Mideast Region in the USTFCCCA rankings after a runner-up finish at the NESCAC Championships.
