WORCESTER, Mass. – A high-scoring affair leaned the way of Amherst softball in their second game on Wednesday night as the Mammoths rode two five-run innings to earn an 11-5 victory against Worcester Polytechnic Institute. The first game lasted five innings as Amherst fell in a 10-1 decision against the Engineers.
The split improved Amherst's record to 15-14 overall while WPI moved to 18-11 on the season. The Mammoths will stay on the road to face rival Williams College next, where they'll face the Ephs in a double-header at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 26
th, at Cole Field.
Game Two: Amherst College 11, Worcester Polytechnic Institute 5
*Junior
Abby Moravek kept the hosts scoreless in the opening frame, striking out one batter and allowing only one hit as senior
America Rangel made quick work of two pop-ups.
*The contest remained 0-0 until the top of the third inning, where a hit produced by sophomore
Heidi Li and a fielding error plated junior
Olivia Aitkin a run, 1-0. First-year
Abby Rebhan then hit a ground-out to make it 2-0 while senior
Dani Torres Werra slammed an RBI double to extend the lead to 3-0. Finally, sophomore Emma Norstrom and Moravek each tallied an RBI single to add two runs and close the stanza 5-0.
*Torres Werra led off the fifth frame with a single to left field. A fielder's choice from Nordstrom advanced Torres Werra to second, and a single from junior
Abby Kong gave way for the runner to cross the plate, 6-0.
*The Mammoths plated another five-run inning in the top of the sixth as first-year
Lulu Leppard led off with a single and Rebhan followed up with a double to plate three runs cumulatively. After Rebhan advanced to third on a wild pitch and Torres Werra stole second, the two crossed the plate on a double down the left field line from Moravek, 11-0.
*The Engineers got on the board in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI single from first-year Colleen Mayer to make it 11-1. Junior Destiny Lum then weakened Amherst's lead to 11-3 with a double-RBI single. Finally, sophomore Sandy Fairbairn nailed a home run to plate two more runs, 11-5.

*Rebhan went 2-4 with 1 run and 3 RBI. Moravek went 2-4 with 3 RBI. Torres Werra went 2-4 with 3 runs and 1 RBI.
*Moravek clinched three strikeouts in five innings. Torres Werra pitched for one inning and relegated the Engineers to 0 hits and 0 runs.
Game One: Worcester Polytechnic Institute 1, Amherst College 10 (5 Inn.)
*Amherst got on the board quickly at the top of the first as Rangel made her way around the diamond and crossed the plate on a throwing error to make it 1-0.
*The Engineers equalized in the bottom of the frame as Fairbairn hit a single to plate sophomore Virginia McKinney a run.
*First-year Lucy Latour led off the second with a home run to center field, tallying three runs and extending WPI's lead to 4-1. A single down the right field line from Lum and a triple from Fairbairn plated a run each and pushed the host's lead to 6-1.
*While Amherst's bats continued to struggle to tally hits, the Engineers continued their momentum into the third, scoring four more runs. A wild pitch and a sacrifice fly produced a point each, while a right-field double from McKinney added two more, 10-1.
*The final two innings of the contest were a back-and-forth affair as neither team secured a hit.

*On the WPI bench, McKinney went 3-3 with 2 RBI and Latour went 1-1 with 3 RBI. Rangel went 0-1 with 1 run, the most of any Amherst player.
