WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – Amherst softball came out swinging from a three-run deficit at Cole Field on Friday evening, clinching a 4-3 victory over Williams College in their second game as a single from first-year
Abby Rebhan and a groundout from senior
Dani Torres Werra pushed the Mammoths into the lead in the sixth inning. The Mammoths dropped their first game of the series in a 9-2 decision against the Ephs.
Amherst's record improved to 16-15 and 6-8 in the NESCAC while Williams moved to 22-11 overall and 9-5 in the conference. The Mammoths will return home to host Hamilton College for Senior Day next as they take on the Continentals in a double-header on Saturday, April 27
th, at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. on the Amherst Softball Field.
Game Two: Amherst College 4, Williams College 3
*Williams plated the first runs of the match with a double-RBI single up center field from first-year April Medrano, 2-0.
*As groundouts snuffed Amherst's bats, senior Sydney Fleming extended the Ephs' margin to 3-0 in the third with a lead-off home run to left field.
*Sophomore
Heidi Li reached on a single, advancing to third on a wild pitch and a single from first-year
Lulu Leppard. With no outs, Rebhan dropped a groundout to third base to drive in Li, 3-1. After Leppard reached third, a groundout from Torres Werra plated the former a run and weakened the margin to 3-2.
*Strong work within the circle kept the Ephs scoreless in the fourth and fifth as junior
Abby Moravek struck out two batters.
*The Mammoths exploded into the lead in the sixth, riding a two-run rally to slide past Williams. Leppard led off the frame, reaching on a fielder's choice and crossing the plate on a Rebhan single to right field. Torres Werra followed up with a groundout to score Rebhan, 4-3.
*Strong fielding allowed Amherst to clinch the win as Li took care of a fly out, sophomore
Jenna Holmes snagged a line out, and Leppard ended William's momentum with a final groundout.
BY THE NUMBERS:
*Torres Werra went 1-3 with 2 RBI and Rebhan went 1-3 with 1 run and 1 RBI. Medrano went 2-3 for the Ephs with 2 RBI.
*Moravek struck out 4 Williams batters and relegated the Ephs to 6 hits.
Game One: Williams College 9, Amherst College 2
*The game was a back-and-forth affair until the bottom of the third inning, when a single from senior Vicky Trujillo Balderas plated sophomore Emily Borrazzo a run and put Williams on the board 1-0. A punishing home run followed as Fleming sent the ball past center field to add two more runs, 3-0.
*Amherst weakened Williams's lead to 3-2 in the top of the fourth. Li led off with a bunt to third base, then made her way around the diamond to cross the plate on a single from Werra. A fielding error gave the Mammoths their next run as first-year
Laura Daniels reached on a single to center field.
*The hosts extended their lead to 5-2 in the bottom of the frame as a back-to-back double and single plated a run each for the Ephs.
*As Amherst's bats continued to struggle to connect hits, Williams continued to inch away from the Mammoths in the sixth stanza. Senior Kaia Glickman opened the frame with a double-RBI home run to center field, 7-2. The Ephs capitalized on a fielding error to make it 8-2 and concluded the inning with an RBI single to add one more.
