HARTFORD, Conn. – Junior
Bennett Chow tallied four goals and added two assists to power the Amherst College men's lacrosse team to a commanding 16-10 victory over Trinity College Wednesday evening.
The Mammoths exploded for six goals in the opening quarter and never looked back, maintaining a multi-goal cushion throughout the high-scoring NESCAC contest. Amherst featured a balanced offensive attack, with 11 different players recording points and five players registering multiple goals.
Amherst set the tone early, scoring three goals in less than a minute midway through the first quarter to open up a 4-1 lead. Chow's second of the day, followed by goals from
Alex Vlacich and
Nico Berger, sparked the run.
Willie Doyle capped the quarter with a goal at the 45-second mark, sending Amherst into the second up 6-1.
The Mammoths continued their dominance in the second quarter, with Doyle and
Brendan Reilly connecting just 30 seconds in. Trinity briefly slowed the momentum with a man-up goal from Jake Connors, but Amherst responded with three of the next four tallies—highlighted by an unassisted rocket from
Alex Giacobbe and Chow's third—to take a 10-2 lead. Trinity added two more before halftime, but
Bob Gross's second goal gave Amherst an 11-4 advantage heading into the break.
Trinity fought back in the second half with a pair of goals from Jay Ottomanelli and Miles Harvey, and narrowed the gap to 12-7. However, Amherst had an answer at every turn.
Nicholas Kopp's goal at 5:42 of the third and Chow's fourth early in the fourth quarter helped keep the Mammoths firmly in control.
With just under three minutes to go, Reilly scored off a feed from Gross, and
Matthew Sheinberg added the exclamation point with a solo effort in the final minute.
With the win, Amherst improves to 10-4 overall and 7-3 in NESCAC play and will return to action on Saturday (April 26) when they host Middlebury in the NESCAC Quarterfinals at 3 p.m.
