AMHERST, Mass. -- Down six runs eight batters into the game Wednesday, the Amherst College baseball team climbed back into the contest before ultimately falling to R.P.I. on Memorial Field, 10-6.
The Mammoths fell to 7-9 ahead of a scheduled three-game set with Tufts this weekend beginning with a single game Friday set to begin at 3:30 p.m. The Engineers improved to 15-6 on the year.
Leo Foust and
Jack Sampedro each had three hits in the Mammoths' loss.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* Amherst trailed 6-0 after a half-inning Wednesday but got one back in its haf of the first when
Jack Boyle was hit by a pitch, stole second, took third on a groundout and scored on Sampedro's sacrifice fly.
* Trailing 7-1, the Mammoths crept closer with two runs in the third.
Tyler McCord led off with a line single to left and Sampedro followed with a double in the right-center field gap. RBI-groundouts by
Ryan McIntyre and
Charlie LaFreniere scored the runners to make it 7-3.
* Down 8-3 heading into the bottom of the fourth, Amherst got one back when Foust laced a one-out double, took third on a wild pitch, and scored on
Ben Smith's sacrifice fly to make it an 8-4 game.
* It was still a four-run game into the bottom of the sixth when walks to
Aiden Dubetsky, Boyle and McCord loaded the bases with one out. However, a pop up to first brought up McIntyre, who gave the ball a ride to deep left center where it was caught to end the threat.
* With one out in the bottom of the seventh frame,
Justin Orridge grounded a single up the middle and Foust ripped a single down the left-field line. Smith then ripped a shot into left that went for an RBI-single and cut the deficit to 8-5, but a double play ended the inning.
* In the bottom of the eighth, now looking at a 10-5 deficit, Sampedro singled and McIntyre walked, but the Engineers rolled another inning-ending twin killing.
BY THE NUMBERS:
* Amherst out hit its visitors, 11-10. Foust was 3 for 4 with a double, home run, RBI and two runs scored. Sampedro was 3 for 4 with an RBI and runs scored.

Matt Tabet (1-2) took the loss for the Mammoths, going two innings and allowing seven runs, four earned.
