Mammoths Stymie Vassar in NCAA First Round Battle, 64-49

NORTHAMPTON, Mass.. – The Amherst College women's basketball team defeated Vassar College on the Ainsworth Gymnasium to advance to the next round of the NCAA tournament behind double-digit scoring from Laura Mendell and Maya Cwalina

The Mammoths (20-7 overall) won their first NCAA Tournament game since the 2021-22 season. They advance to play Smith College (27-2) at the Pioneers' Ainsworth Gymnasium Saturday at 6:45 p.m.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* The Mammoths kicked off quarter one with strong momentum. Anna Tranum drained a layup and jumper, Kori Barach netted a layup and free throw, and Mendell sank two successful free throws to give the Mammoths a 9-0 advantage over Vassar with seven minutes and 22 seconds remaining in the first quarter. 

* With a 21-9 advantage after the first 10 minutes, Amherst opened quarter two by putting 7 consecutive points on the board, following Barach's layups, Mendell's layups, and Reagan Pahl's free throw. Mendell drained a three-pointer with one minute and 47 seconds remaining, elevating the score to 31-14. Brielle Renwick put a free throw on the board 20 seconds later. Amherst entered halftime in the lead, 32-17

* Vassar narrowed the scoring margin slightly in the early part of quarter three, getting within 10 points of the Mammoths with 3 minutes and 42 seconds remaining. Cwalina sank a layup, and Barach scored points on two free throws to regain momentum in the final three minutes of the third quarter.

* Pahl drained a three-pointer 1 minute and 36 seconds into the fourth quarter. Soon after, Mendell drained a layup that began a 10-point run for the Mammoths, featuring a second impressive three-pointer from Pahl. Amherst had a 64-42 lead entering the final three minutes of the game and despite a late run from Vassar, the Mammoths' victory was secure. 

BY THE NUMBERS:

* Mendell led in terms of points, scoring 15. Cwalina had the second-highest number of points with 12. 

* Mendell and Tranum led in terms of rebounds, with 9 and 8, respectively. Amherst won te battle of the ass by a wopping 49-19 margin. 

* Renwick contributed 9 points and 7 rebounds. Barach had 9 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists.  Tranum had 7 points and 8 rebounds while Pahl notched 7 points and 6 rebounds. Each had 2 assists.
