AMHERST, MA – In a matchup between two top-10 teams, #9 Amherst College stormed back from an early deficit to defeat #7 Bowdoin College 12-8 on Saturday at Pratt Field.

Led by a dominant second-half performance from Willie Doyle and a four-assist effort from Bennett Chow, the Mammoths outscored the Polar Bears 8-2 after halftime to secure the victory.

Amherst improved to 6-0 overall, 4-0 in NESCAC play. Bowdoin fell to 6-1 overall, 3-1 in conference play.

Next up, Amherst will look to extend its winning streak when they play Roanoke College back on Pratt Field at 12 p.m. on Saturday.

Fast Start for Bowdoin

* The game opened with Amherst's Bennett Chow striking first at 11:01 in the first quarter, but Bowdoin quickly responded. Jed Hoggard evened the score just 20 seconds later, and the Polar Bears took control with goals from Casey Ryan, Michael Norton, and Chris Berry, building a commanding 4-1 lead by the end of the first quarter.

Amherst Claws Back in the Second

* The Mammoths found their rhythm early in the second quarter, with Chow setting up Willy Doyle for a goal at 13:46. Just 19 seconds later, Sam Sneider finished off an assist from Alex Giacobbe, cutting the deficit to 4-3. Although Bowdoin's Norton answered back at 10:23, Amherst continued to apply pressure. Another Chow assist, this time to Alex Vlacich, brought the score to 5-4 before Bowdoin's Sam Raye-Steiner closed the half with a goal, giving the Polar Bears a 6-4 advantage at the break.

A Mammoth Surge in the Third

* Coming out of halftime, Amherst took complete control. Brenden Reilly got the scoring started at 11:27, followed by back-to-back goals from Doyle, including the go-ahead tally at 4:07 to give Amherst its first lead since the opening minutes. Bob Gross then capped off a dominant quarter, scoring twice in the final three minutes to put Amherst ahead 9-6 heading into the fourth.

Closing it Out

* Bowdoin tried to rally behind two goals from Casey Ryan, cutting the lead to 9-8, but Amherst wasn't finished. Giacobbe's goal off a Doyle assist at 5:25 gave the Mammoths breathing room before Doyle struck again, this time off a pass from Vlacich, to make it 11-8. Reilly sealed the victory with an unassisted goal at 2:37, completing a dominant second half for the Mammoths.

* With the win, Amherst not only earned a key NESCAC victory but also proved its ability to battle back against top-tier competition. Doyle finished with four goals and an assist, while Chow played a pivotal role with one goal and three assists. Bowdoin's Casey Ryan led his squad with three goals, but the Polar Bears couldn't withstand Amherst's second-half surge.
