Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Third period surge propels Amherst over Connecticut College in NESCAC Quarterfinals

AMHERST, Mass. – Three late third-period goals from Gretchen Dann, Bea Flynn, and Cara Mancini, along with Marie-Eve Marleau's second-period goal, helped secure a 4-0 victory for the top-seeded Mammoths over the No. 8 seed Connecticut College Camels in the quarterfinals of the NESCAC tournament.

The women's ice hockey team has improved to an 18-5-1 record and will move on to the tournament's semifinals on their home ice. The opponent will be determined based on the outcome of today's remaining quarterfinal games.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* Amherst's Abban picked up a clear from Connecticut College goaltender Devon Galizio and slipped it to Bea Flynn. Flynn ripped a shot from the right face-off circle, leading to a scramble in the crease before Galizio made another save and clear. Marleau, skating in from the high crease, captured the loose puck and buried it in the top right corner of the net with 10:04 remaining in the second period during an Amherst powerplay.

* After Anna Baxter won the face-off for the Mammoths in the Camel's zone, she sent it back to Dann, stationed by the left point, where she fired a needle-in-thread shot into the back of the net at 13:05 in the third period, giving Amherst the two-point lead.

* Having received the puck from Abban by the boards, Flynn carried the puck around Connecticut College's right face-off circle and sent the puck in toward the crease for a scramble to ensue. Capitalizing off a rebound, Abban tipped the puck toward the goal, but Camel's Galizio made the save; Flynn rushed in for the finishing touch to get the third goal of the evening for Amherst with 4:06 left in regulation.

* Amherst's Mancini dished the puck to Dann by the blue line, who passed across the ice to Emily Hohmann and right back to Dann for a shot toward the net. Mancini picked up the rebound and backhanded the puck into the net with 2:30 remaining in the third period.
