2/1/2025 4:58:00 PM

Box Score MIDDLETOWN, CT. – In high-flying offensive game, the Amherst College men's ice hockey team snapped their four-game losing streak on Saturday, Feb 1. In their second game of the season versus Wesleyan, whom they lost to by a 3-1 scoreline earlier this season, the Mammoths got the revenge they sought with a 5-3 win.

With the loss, the Mammoths improve to 8-9-1, while Wesleyan falls to 4-11-3 overall. Amherst's next game against Colby opens a four-game home stand, during which they will hope to start a late-season win-streak to improve their standing in the NESCAC as the season hits its home stretch. They will take on the Mules on Friday, Feb. 7, with puck drop scheduled for 7 p.m. at Orr Rink.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* Wesleyan's first goal of the game came after just four minutes had come off the clock,
But Amherst responded in kind just 15 seconds later. After play restarted the Mammoths immediately shoveled a long pass into the zone. Josh Burke did an excellent job on the forecheck, showing his man into the glass and freeing up the puck in the process. That puck was shoved behind the net to Ben Cook, who fired it into the goalmouth. Burke, who was standing at the near post, redirected the puck past the Wesleyan goalie to even the score at 1-1.

* The Mammoths took the lead at the 6:29 mark. The puck was again lofted into the zone, when this time, it was chased down by Andrew Carmody. The defensemen executed essentially the same play as Amherst's first tally: he played the puck around the boards behind the net to Ben Kuzma, who fired the puck in front of net. This time though, the shot slipped by the Cardinals' netminder to give the Mammoths their first lead since Jan. 17 at Conn. College.

* Amherst's offensive flurry in a busy first period continued when they netted their third just 10:37 in. Another good forecheck, this time from Jacob Pohl, kept the puck in the Mammoths' offensive zone, where they were able to settle it down. Burke found Cook once again, who ripped a shot that Bobby Luca deflected home to give them a two-goal lead. This lead was short lived, though, as Wesleyan scored in one minute --- at 12:49 and 13:31 --- later in the frame to even the score once again heading into the second.

* The scoring didn't stop there though – Kuzma netted his second of the day at 8:29 in the frame to retake the lead. After a period of sustained pressure in the Cardinals' zone, Oliver Flynn recovered a loose puck in the corner. He skated to his right and pushed the puck behind him into the low slot for Kuzma. The Amherst captain put a backhander on net and then potted his own rebound to give the Mammoths a 4-3 lead.

*  The Mammoths dominated the third, outshooting Wesleyan 10-4 in the first 15 minutes, but could not find the back of the net. And so, the 4-3 margin remained until Ryan Corcoran iced the game with an empty net goal with a 1:07 remaining, sealing a 5-3 victory.

BY THE NUMBERS:

* Kuzma's two goals on the day gave him his fifth and sixth on the season and his second multi-goal game of the campaign.

* The Mammoths turned it around offensively after they struggled on that side of the ice yesterday: Amherst's five goals was their most since they scored five in a Jan. 11 win versus Bowdoin.

* Leslie made 27 saves in the win.
