Mammoths Battle to 1-1 Draw With #11 Babson

BABSON PARK, MA – A second period tally from senior Zachary Murray helped extend the Amherst men's ice hockey team's unbeaten streak to three on Sunday, Nov. 30. Facing their second nationally ranked opponent in as many days in #11 Babson, a tightly contested game ended in a 1-1 tie after the five-minute overtime, though the Mammoths lost the shootout 1-0.

With the draw, the Mammoths move to 3-2-1 on the season while the Beavers' record stands at to 7-1-2. Amherst will return to NESCAC action in their next game, facing Middlebury on the road in Vermont on Friday, Dec. 3. Puck drop against the Panthers is scheduled for 7 p.m.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* The game's first period was defined by goalkeeper play, with Vincent Lamberti making 11 saves while Beavers' netminder Nate Mueller stopped 7 pucks on the way to a 0-0 scoreline heading into the first break.
* The second period is when Amherst seemed to find the most success, outshooting Babson 9-7 on the way to a 1-0 lead by the end of the frame. That margin came via the stick of Murray, who netted off assists from Matt Vander Vort and Romulus Riego de Dios at 13:45 in the second.

* However, that margin would not last long into the final period, as the Beavers tied the game just 2:36 into the period. Despite a strong push in the final 7 minutes of the game, with Amherst rifling 8 shots to Babson's 0 in that time, they were unable to convert and the game would go to overtime.

* Defense was again the name of the game in the extra period, with just 4 total shots in the five-minute frame, all on goal, but neither team would score and the game would go down as a tie.

* Though officially logged in the record books as a tie, the game did go to a shootout. The Beavers came out on top 1-0, scoring on their final attempt.

BY THE NUMBERS:
*  The Beavers outshot the Mammoths 27-25 in shots on goal in the game, though the Mammoths found more success at the faceoff dot, winning 33-60 on the day.

* Vander Vort's assist moves him into a tie for the team lead with 3 on the season, as well as into second on the team in total points with 5.

* Lamberti made 26 saves against Babson.
