AMHERST, MA – An OT goal from
Oliver Flynn delivered a win for the Amherst men's ice hockey team against Division II Saint Michael's College on Tuesday, Nov. 25. Competing on the ice at Orr Rink for the first time this season, the Mammoths took control in the extra period and emerged victorious by a score of 3-2.
With the win, the Mammoths improve to 2-2 on the season while the Purple Knights drop to 3-3-3. Amherst will stay home for their next matchup, taking on national #9 SUNY Geneseo in another tough non-conference game on Saturday, Nov. 29. Puck drop at Orr Rink is scheduled for 3 p.m.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* Amherst got the scoring started early, with a tally from
Vincent Velocci at the 6:44 mark. The junior took a pass from senior
Zachary Murray and rifled a shot past the Saint Michael's goalkeeper to give Amherst a 1-0 lead.
* That score would hold until the beginning of the second, when the Purple Knights would get one back about a third of the way through the period. The scoring then cooled off once again until the beginning of the third, with two goals in the final frame. The first, scored at the 11:04 mark put Saint Michael's up one.
* However, the Mammoths had a response, scoring less than a minute later to tie the game at two apiece. The game tying goal was scored by defenseman Zach Jesse, who netted his first of the year in a big moment to keep his team in the game.
* Despite a strong push from the Mammoths at the end of the third, the game would go to overtime, where Amherst eventually found the game winner. that goal came off the stick of
Oliver Flynn, off the assist from
Josh Burke after just 38 seconds had elapsed. Burke's assist is his fourth point in as many games this season, and sealed a 3-2 overtime win for Amherst.
BY THE NUMBERS:
* Amherst dominated the game offensively, putting 43 shots on goal as compared to the Purple Knights' 15.
* Flynn was the day's highest point scorer, with a goal and an assist on the game
* Sophomore netminder Mateo DeLuca made 15 saves in his first appearance this season.
