AMHERST, Mass. – Sophomore Elias Chin notched the Amherst Men's Basketball team's first double-double of the season, recording 11 points and 10 rebounds, to help propel the Mammoths past Emmanuel College 77-40 on Tuesday night at Lefrak Gymnasium.
Amherst improved to a 4-1 overall record while Emmanuel fell to 3-3 on the season. The Mammoths will host Mount Saint Mary College next, who they'll face at LeFrak Gymnasium on Sunday at 12 p.m.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
*Junior Marc Garraraud got Amherst on the board in the first minute, sinking a three-pointer from the left wing with 18:54 to go.
*In the following four minutes, a string of successful free throws from Emmanuel weakened Amherst's lead to 5-4.
*The Mammoths put their collective feet on the gas between 13:26 and 4:48 remaining, pouring in 25 points while conceding only 4. Chin led off with a layup, followed by buckets from first-year K.J. Neville, junior Zane Adnan, first-year Brandon Margolin, senior Drew Martin, junior Nate Pabis, senior Chris Hammond, and junior Johnny McCain.
*Emmanuel gained momentum in the final five minutes of the period as junior Connor Hanavan and sophomore Damante Vanheyningen teamed up to net a layup and three-pointer, respectively, pushing the game to 37-14 at the buzzer.
*Both sides found themselves in a back-and-forth stalemate at the start of the second, with Neville and junior Mahari Guerrier each notching three-pointers in the fourth minute.
*Chin, Pabis, and Adnan grouped together in the sixth and seventh minutes to distance the Mammoths from the visitors. At 14:06 remaining, Chin drove through a web of players to secure a diving layup from the paint. Pabis followed up 33 seconds later, nailing a three-pointer from the left wing, which Adnan soon supplemented with a stylish reverse layup, 56-25.
*Amherst continued to strike from behind the arc as McCain landed a left-flank three-pointer with 8:47 to play.
*First-year Ryan Rangel retaliated two minutes later, sinking a three-pointer of his own from the left side of the arch.
*The Mammoths kept the pressure on in the final five minutes, limiting Emmanuel to one successful jumper while netting a three-pointer apiece from McCain and Pabis to close the contest 77-40.
BY THE NUMBERS:
*Amherst held the offensive advantage, leading 42.9% (27-63) to 31% (13-42) in field goal conversions, 32.3% (10-31) to 13% (3-23) in three-pointers netted, and 81.3% (13-16) to 57.9% (11-19) in free throws made.
*Garraud, Chin, and Neville tied for the most points of the night, each scoring 11. In addition, Chin was the only player to notch a double-double, recording 11 rebounds. The sophomore also found the most assists of the night with 5.
