Colby defeats Amherst in Season Opener

AMHERST, MASS– Junior Maeve Kelley won three events and first-years Penny Lazar and Hope Taylor had competitive career-opening swims as the Amherst College women's swimming and diving team was edged by NESCAC rival Colby College, 146-152.

The Mammoths will be back in the pool next Saturday, November 22, as they head to Middlebury, Vermont, for a dual meet against Middlebury College.

 

MEET HIGHLIGHTS

  • Kelley picked up right where she left off last season, earning three event victories on the day. Kelley swept the 200 Freestyle with a 1:55.95, leading an Amherst 1–2 finish alongside sophomore Ava Insteness (1:56.68). She returned later to claim the 200 Butterfly in 2:08.51, securing her second individual win. Kelley capped off the day with a victory in the 500 Free, finishing in a time of 5:11.75.

  • Senior Donna Zhang opened her season with a statement victory, winning the 1-meter diving competition with a meet-best 266.69 points. Zhang also took first place in the 3-meter event, scoring 272.32.

  • Junior Paige Arnold also picked up points for the Mammoths. Arnold posted a first-place finish in the 200 IM (2:09.25) and the 100 Butterfly (57.81). Arnold also finished second in the 100 Freestyle (53.21), earning 22 individual points for the Mammoths.

  • First-year swimmers, Penny Lazar and Hope Taylor, opened their careers with dominating swims. Lazar had a commanding victory in the 1000-yard freestyle, finishing in 10:44.28. Taylor earned a first-place finish in the 200 Breaststroke, finishing in 2:27.02, and picking up 9 points for the Mammoths.
