AMHERST, MA – Despite having most of the game's offensive opportunities, the No. 23 Amherst College women's soccer fell in the NESCAC Quarterfinal on Saturday, Nov 1. The fourth seeded Mammoths hosted the #5 seed Colby College Mules in a rematch of last season's NESCAC Final. This time, though, the Mules came out victorious, netting twice on the way to handing Amherst a 2-0 loss.
With the loss, the Mammoths move to regular season with a 10-4-2 overall, while Colby improves to 10-3-3. With their NESCAC postseason run now over, the Mammoths will have to wait to find out their postseason fate, with 2025 NCAA Tournament selections announced on Monday, Nov. 9.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* The Mammoths opened the game on the front foot, pushing high up the field and keeping Colby on their heels and pinned into their own defensive third. Amherst earned two corners in the game's first 10 minutes --- that turned into one of their best chances of the game as a perfect ball from
Caroline Coletti was pounced on by
Mekhala Costello. However, the header from the Mammoths' center back was turned away by a diving effort from the Mules goaltender to keep the game level.
* That effort typified the Amherst attack on the day, with Coletti putting tantalizing crosses into the mix all half; both
Brooke Ingemi and
Sophia Haynes got on the end of her crosses and saw 1-touch efforts from 6 yards out sail just wide just minutes apart. On the other end, a great defensive effort from
Kate Quigley after a diving save from
Lulu Fickes helped clear a ball off the line to maintain the 0-0 scoreline.
* That kept the game level, but Colby would soon capitalize, earning a corner of their own that was bumbled in at the doorstep to give them a 1-0 lead heading into the half.
* Just four minutes into the second half, the Mammoths got their best chance to tie the game by way of
Emma Darling. The first-year speedster broke free off a slip ball from Ingemi and beat the onrushing goalkeeper. However, the Mules' net minder was able to disrupt the play just enough that Darling could not control the bouncing ball, and her shot was cleared off the line by a defender to keep the deficit at 1.
* The Mammoths kept pushing, putting shot after shot in on goal but could not convert. paydirt. With 12 minutes to go and the Mammoths pushing numbers forward in hopes for an equalizer, the Colby got their insurance goal, capitalizing on a quick counter attack to put the game out of reach, and seal Amherst's NESCAC Tournament exit.
