GRANTHAM, PA. -- Second-half strikes by sophomores
Caroline Coletti and
Jessica Lomo were the difference Saturday as the Amherst College women's soccer team shutout Cortland State, 2-0, in an NCAA Div. III Tournament First Round game played at Messiah University's Shoemaker Field.
Amherst advances to the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the seventh straight tourney (there was no field in 2020) and improved to 11-4-2 on the season.
Following a closely-contested first half which saw Amherst lead in shots, 3-2, after 45 minutes, the Mammoths gained control with a dominating final 45, outshooting the Red Dragons 17-1 in that stanza.while creating nine corner kick opportunities to Cortland's zero.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* In the game's 58th minute, Coletti collected a ball at the top of the box, swept around a defender going left to right, and unleashed a low 20-yard rip that glanced off the hands of the Cortland goalkeeper and into the net for a 1-0 lead.
* With Cortland pressing to try and tie the game, Amherst took advantage of some open spacing. Millie McLead tapped a ball back to Lomo just beyond the top of the box and Lomo came through with a gorgeous boot into the top left corner of the goal just under the crossbar for a critical insurance goal.
