MIDDLETOWN, CT — The Amherst College men's soccer team traveled to Middletown on Saturday afternoon to face second-seeded Wesleyan University in the NESCAC Quarterfinals. Coming off a 1–0 win over Trinity earlier in the week, the seventh-seeded Mammoths entered the match-up with solid momentum. In a tightly contested game marked by several lead changes, Amherst battled until the final seconds but ultimately fell 3–2 after Wesleyan scored the game-winner with just 15 seconds remaining.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
- In an energetic start marked by early chances from both sides, Wesleyan capitalized first, breaking through in the 18th minute to take a 1–0 lead.
- Amherst answered just before halftime, as Vincent Akanbo found the back of the net in the 43rd minute off an assist from Jacob Dinzeo, bringing the game level at 1–1 heading into halftime.
- Wesleyan came out strong to start the second half, but Amherst's back line held firm under pressure. The Mammoths flipped the momentum in the 60th minute when Akanbo tallied his second of the day, assisted by Luka Ohadike, to put Amherst ahead 2–1.
- Despite Amherst holding the lead for much of the half, Wesleyan kept up the pressure and eventually evened the score at 2–2 with a goal in the 80th minute.
- With both teams pressing for a late game-winning goal, Wesleyan broke the deadlock once more, scoring with just 15 seconds remaining to secure a dramatic 3–2 victory and end Amherst's postseason run.
BY THE NUMBERS:
- Wesleyan finished with a slight edge in shots, outshooting Amherst 17–9, 12 of which came in the second half.
- Amherst, however, controlled set-piece opportunities, holding a 5–2 advantage in corner kicks.
- Goalkeeper Trey Sheppard played all 90 minutes and made 7 key saves to keep Amherst within striking distance.
- Up front, Mohammed Nuhu led the team with 3 shots, while Oped Opoku and Vincent Akanbo each had 2 shots.

- With the loss, Amherst now falls to an 8-5-3 overall record (4-4-2 against NESCAC competition).
- While this marks the end of the Mammoths' NESCAC season, their campaign may not be over. Amherst now awaits word on whether they will receive an invitation to the NCAA DIII Men's Soccer Tournament, which begins on November 15. If they qualify, the Mammoths will aim to defend their title as last year's national champions.
