#20 Wesleyan Snaps #23 Mammoths' Unbeaten Streak, Suffering 3-0 Defeat

MIDDLETOWN, CONN. – The No. 23-ranked Amherst College women's soccer team fell for the first time in five games on Saturday, Oct. 4.  Taking on No. 20 Wesleyan on the road in a Little Three matchup, the Mammoths couldn't find a rhythm and suffered a tough 3-0 defeat.

With the loss, the Mammoths fall to 6-2-2 this season, while Wesleyan improve to 6-1-3. Amherst has little time to dwell on their loss, however, with another road game in just two days' time. The team will travel to Boston to take on out-of-conference opponent  Emmanuel College (Mass.) on Monday, Oct. 6. Kickoff against the Saints is at 7 p.m.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* The Mammoths found themselves on the back foot early, with Wesleyan looking to capitalize on a few early chances, but senior keeper Lulu Fickes stood tall, making two early saves to keep the game level. Center backs Mekhala Costello and Sofia Preuss also played a huge role in weathering the storm early in the contest.

* However, the Cardinals' momentum eventually saw them go in front, with a corner kick that bounced around in the box and was put in by Wesleyan's Maria Utz to put Amherst down 1-0.

* Shortly after that goal, though, the Mammoths got one of their best scoring opportunities of the game. Emma Darling got on the end of a ball in behind the Wesleyan defense, and cut the ball back to Brooke Ingemi at the top of the box. Ingemi's one-touch shot beat the goalkeeper but pinged off the left post, denying the Mammoths and keeping the deficit at 1-0 heading into the half.

* Coming out of halftime, Amherst got a flury of chances early to tie the game, with chief among them a superb run through the defense by Jessica Lomo. The junior weaved her way around the Cardinals' outside back and got to the end line but was taken down by a Wesleyan defender on the end line. Ultimately, the ref ruled the play clean and play continued.

* Wesleyan iced the game with two goals in six minutes, and even though they created a number of chances late in the game, the Mammoths were unable to convert and fell to the Cardinals 3-0.

BY THE NUMBERS:

* Lomo led the Mammoths with 4 shots, including 2 on goal, while Darling notched 3 with 2 on goal in the loss.

* The Cardinals outshot the Mammoths 19-13 overall, including 9-6 in shots on goal. They also saw more corners in the match, earning 5 to Amherst's 3.

* Fickes had a good game in goal despite the scoreline, making a season-high 6 saves on the day.
