BOSTON, Mass. – The No. 23-ranked Amherst College women's soccer team overcame an early deficit with three unanswered goals — all from set pieces — to earn a 3–1 road victory over Emmanuel College on Tuesday afternoon.
With the win, the Mammoths improve to 7-2-2 on the season, while the Saints fall to 6-3-2.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* Emmanuel opened the scoring less than two minutes into the match. Ciara Horan drove down the right flank and cut inside before sending a dangerous ball into the box, where Sarah Dullaghan redirected it into the net to give the Saints an early 1–0 advantage.
* Amherst responded with steady pressure and sustained possession but entered halftime still trailing. The breakthrough came in the 54th minute off a well-executed corner kick and a sequence of crisp passing. Senior
Kate Quigley collected a clearance on the left flank and served a cross into the box, where junior
Katie Pedersen laid it off for senior
Katie O'Reilly. O'Reilly unleashed a screamer into the top-right corner to equalize.
* The Mammoths continued to dictate the tempo and capitalized again in the 63rd minute, once more from a corner kick. Sophomore
Caroline Coletti played a short pass to first-year
Emma Darling running along the endline, and Darling quickly returned the ball to Coletti. Coletti beat her defender and fired a shot on goal, which the Emmanuel goalkeeper mishandled. Senior
Brooke Ingemi was first to the loose ball and finished confidently with her left foot to give Amherst a 2–1 lead.
* Amherst added a third goal just over four minutes later, again demonstrating their set-piece prowess. Coletti's corner service sailed to the far post, where
Kate Quigley rose above her defender and powered a header into the back of the net to extend the lead to 3–1.
* The Mammoths' back line held firm for the remainder of the match, limiting the Saints' scoring opportunities and preserving the two-goal cushion. Goalkeeper
Lulu Fickes anchored the defense with four saves.
