Late Akanbo goal lifts Mammoths past Trinity in regular-season finale, 1-0

AMHERST, MA — The Mammoths returned home on Tuesday night for a NESCAC game against Trinity College to finish off their regular season. After an away loss to Bowdoin Polar Bears on Saturday, the Mammoths were able to get away with a 1-0 win. After many good opportunities, Amherst found a way to score late into the second half. With the regular season ending for the Mammoths, they are looking forward to going deep in the NESCAC tournament, which kicks off on Saturday, November 1.

With the win today, Amherst's record is now 8-4-3 (4-4-2 in the NESCAC). They will be the 7th seeded team in the NESCAC tournament.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
  • The defense was strong from both teams in the first half, not giving either team many opportunities to open score. Amherst had two noteworthy headers attempts in the first half: one from Luka Ohadike and one from Vincent Akanbo. Luka Ohadike found his chance early by getting a shot in the 9th minute. His attempt was unsuccessful as he missed just left of the woodwork. Vincent Akanbo was able to find the frame with his header in the 41st minute. His attempt was intercepted by the Trinity goalie to maintain the clean sheet for the first half.
  • Luka Ohadike found the frame early into the second half with his shot in the 53rd minute. His shot did not open the score for the Mammoths as it was saved by the goalie. This shot on goal was Luka Ohadike's second of the 2025 season.
  • To put Mammoths in the lead, first-year Vincent Akanbo of Ghana scored the winning goal in the 82nd minute. Vincent was assisted by Obed Opoku to score his first of the season, and his collegiate career. Although Trinity kept pressuring until the end of the game, Amherst kept its calm and claimed the victory on home turf to head into the NESCAC tournament with a conference win.
