AMHERST, MA – A late goal saw the Amherst College women's soccer team suffer their third loss of the season up on Saturday, Oct. 18. Taking on Hamilton at home on Gooding field, the Mammoths saw one unlucky bounce find its way into their net and fell to the Continentals 1-0.
Before kickoff, the Mammoths to the time to celebrate the team's eight seniors:
Lulu Fickes,
Ella Johnson,
Sophia Haynes,
Kate Quigley,
Halle Hanna,
Brooke Ingemi,
Katie O'Reilly, and
Ella Watkins. Overall, the class of 2026 has amassed an overall record of 59-10-9, won three NESCAC Championships (2022, 2023, 2024), and three NCAA tournaments, making two Sweet 16 appearances (2022, 2023) and one trip to the Elite Eight (2024).
With the defeat, the Mammoths fall to 8-3-2 this season, while Hamilton improves to 7-4-3. Amherst will hope to get back on the right track in their penultimate game of the regular season, travelling to Brunswick, Maine to take on Bowdoin on Saturday, Oct. 25. Kickoff against the Polar Bears is scheduled for 12 p.m.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* The Mammoths got the first chance of the game early, winning the ball back on the opening kickoff and switching the point of attack to find
Caroline Coletti on the right wing. Unfortunately, her effort was saved by Hamilton goalkeeper Nieve Tonna.
* Most of the first half passed without either team creating many dangerous chances – the Mammoths' defense of goalkeeper Fickes, and backs Johnson, Quigley,
Mekhala Costello and
Sofia Preuss kept the Continentals from finding space, and the score remained tied at 0-0 heading into the half.
* Amherst came into the second half with a renewed energy and offensive spark, with their half-time adjustments seemingly making a difference. A flurry of chances came in the middle part of the frame, with chances from Haynes, Coletti, and
Emma Darling all coming close to giving their side the lead. However, all three attempts were either saved or put wide to preserve the tie.
* However, with just under 10 minutes to go, Hamilton found the game-winner. Earning a corner kick, they served the ball into the box. The Mammoths struggled to clear the first ball, and the second was rifled across the face of goal where it was bodied in by a Hamilton player on the back post. 1-0 Continentals.
* Despite a final push in the game's last 10 minutes and a last-second free kick attempt, their attempts were turned away, and the Mammoths dropped a heartbreaker to Hamilton, 1-0.

* Ingemi, Coletti, and Lomo lead the Mammoths with two shots each, with Coletti and Ingemi each putting 1 shot on goal.
* The Mammoths outshot the Continentals 12-10 overall, but Hamilton held the advantage in shots on goal, 6-3. The Mammoths also earned more corner kicks, holding a 5-2 advantage.
* Fickes made 5 saves in the match.
