AMHERST, Mass. --
Marek Hill's fourth-down pass from the 3-yard line fell incomplete as time expired Saturday as the Amherst College football team dropped a 13-9 decision to Colby College in front of a Family Weekend crowd on Pratt Field at Lehrman Stadium.
The loss brought an end to the Mammoths' four-game win streak. Amherst dropped to 4-2 overall and will return to action next Saturday in an away game against Wesleyan University. Colby improved to 3-3.Â
Hill completed 35 of 62 passes for 306 yards and a touchdown during the game. Junior wideout
Christian Moore had a strong performance with 10 receptions for 114 yards and a TD. Senior
Carter Jung added 6 catches for 66 yards. Hill set a new Amherst record for pass attempts in a singe game.Â
The Mammoths outgained Colby 387-96 in total yards and held a massive 36:53 to 23:07 edge in time of possession, but struggled to capitalize on scoring opportunities.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* Colby struck first when Brody Rice intercepted
Marek Hill's pass on Amherst's opening drive and returned it 19 yards to the Amherst 16. Two plays later, Colby's Miles Drake rushed in from 1 yard out to give the Polar Bears a 7-0 lead with 13:19 left in the first quarter.
* The Mammoths answered with a methodical 12-play, 66-yard drive that consumed nearly six minutes of the second quarter. Hill connected with Moore for 11 yards and the touchdown with 6:46 remaining in the half.
Hudson Fulcher-Melendy's extra point tied the game at 7-7.
* Colby regained the lead early in the third quarter when Corey Aubuchon blocked
Efe Ilgar's punt at the Amherst 3-yard line and returned it for a touchdown at the 3:22 mark. The extra point attempt failed, giving Colby a 13-7 advantage.
* Amherst closed the gap in the fourth quarter when Colby was called for a holding penalty in the end zone, resulting in a safety with 8:41 remaining. The score made it 13-9, but that would be as close as the Mammoths would get.
* Amherst drove deep into Colby's territory on their final possession, reaching the Colby 3-yard line with under 10 seconds remaining. However, Hill's fourth-down pass to Jung fell incomplete as time expired, ending the comeback attempt.
