Mammoths erupt in second half en route to 34-7 win at Bowdoin

BRUNSWICK, Me. -- The Amherst College football team scored 34 unanswered points Saturday -- 24 in the second half as it rolled up 306 yards of total offense -- en route to a 34-7 win over Bowdoin College at the Polar Bears' Whittier Field.

The win was the fourth straight for the Mammoths, who have fashioned their first four-game win streak since winning the first seven games of the 2018 season. Amherst is off to a 4-1 start for the first time since the 2019 season and will be home vs. Colby on the 18th for a 1 p.m. kick-off.

Sophomore quarterback Marek Hill threw for a career-high 334 yards and 2 touchdowns in Saturday's win. Senior wideout Carter Jung accounted for 252 total yards, including 8 receptions for 181 yards and 2 scores. The 181 yards is a career-high for Jung, as is the total yards. With his 2 touchdowns, he also set a new single-season high with 6. It was the third straight season Jung has scored against Bowdoin.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* The Mammoths still held a tenuous 10-7 lead mid-way through the third quarter and faced a 3rd-and-15 from their own 35 when Hill connected with tight end Matthew Diaz over the middle for a 16-yard gain and a first down. Diaz's spin move at the end of the play allowed him to get the first down by a yard. On the next play, Hill connected with Connor Bunnak for a 30-yard gain down the middle. Demitrius Smith then broke loose for a 15-yard dash to the Bowdoin 4-yard line. The drive stalled their, but sophomore Hudson Fulcher-Melendy booted a 19-yard field goal for a 13-7 Amherst lead with 3:32 remaining in the quarter.

* After the Amherst defense forced another punt -- the Mammoths' D limited Bowdoin to 144 total yards in the game -- Smith broke loose for a 16-yard gain to the Amherst 40. On the first play of the fourth quarter, Smith took a pitch right, evaded a pair of would-be tacklers and dashed down the right sideline for a 49-yard gain to the Bowdoin 11. After a 6-yard run by Zachary Curtin, Smith punctuated the drive by burrowing into the end zone from 5 yards out. The Hudson-Melendy PAT made it 20-7 Amherst with 13:36 left in the game.

* A huge sack by Devin Fragale forced another Bowdoin punt, and Amherst took over on its own 38-yard line. On the first play of the drive, Hill threw a laser that caught Jung in stride and he did the rest, outracing two Polar Bear defenders to paydirt for a 62-yard TD strike and a 27-7 lead with 11:54 to go.

* Hill and Jung hooked up one more time with 4:21 remaining, this time for a 35-yard TD that accounted for the final score. Amherst struck three times in a span of 9:15 in the fourth period to put the game away and  finished with 508 yards of total offense, with 306 coming in the second half and 211 in the fourth quarter alone.

* The Amherst defense picked off 3 passes in the win, and accounted for 3 sacks and 7 tackles for loss. The Mammoths limited the Bowdoin rush attack to 35 yards on 24 carries in the win.

BY THE NUMBERS:

* Smith finished with 107 yards rushing on 13 carries and a score. It was the first 100-yard rushing game of his career. In addition to his 181 yards receiving, Jung racked up 71 yards on 2 kick-off returns, including a 54-yarder immediately following Bowdoin taking a 7-0 lead that set up the tying score when Hill ran in from 5 yards out 4 minutes into the second quarter.

* Peter Macaulay, the Polar Bears' starting QB, scored on a 4-yard run early in the second for a 7-0 Bowdoin lead. That was set up by a Max Oenning interception. Oenning had five tackles, an interception and a pass break-up in the loss.

* Tylik Sims, Carson Skotak, Luke Harmon and Jackson Duncan all led the Mammoths with 4 tackles each. All 4 of Sims were of the solo variety. Harmon added an interceptions and 1 1/2 tackles for loss. Duncan had half a sack. Miles Harmon had an interception and 2 tackles. Josh Kuczynski had a sack.

* The third and final interception for the Mammoths may have been the best play of the day as first-year corner Gabriel Taylor made a sensational leaping, twisting, one-handed pick on the sideline in the final minutes of the contest.
