#3 Mammoths drop first game in 3-1 loss to Norwich

NORTHFIELD, VT A power play goal for the Norwich University Cadet's and an open net goal in the final period push the Cadets past the Mammoths for a 3-1 final score at Kreitzberg Arena in the quarterfinals of the East West Classic Tournament. 

The Mammoths' undefeated streak ends, dropping to 7-1 overall, while remaining 4-0 in conference play.

 Amherst will compete in the consolation game tomorrow (Jan. 6) at 1 p.m., with the opponent yet to be determined.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS 
  • 14:49 into the second period, after winning the face-off, Cadet Olivia King picked up the puck by the left point and passed it to Jordan Brandy at the high slot for a shot and the first goal of the match. 
  • On an Amherst power play, Mammoth Gretchen Dann received the puck at the right point and fired it at net for Norwich goal tender, Leocadia Clark, for her to make the save. However, Marie-Eve Marleau captured the rebound and flicked the puck into the back of the net at 7:25 in the third period.
  • With 10:22 remaining, the Cadets capitalized on a power play as Olivia Boyer retrieved a loose puck near the boards and passed it to King at the left point. King returned it to Boyer, who then crossed the puck to Jenna Nikles for a one-timer into the net.
  • With 10 seconds remaining, Cadet Breanna Ricker picked up the loose puck in the slot and sent it across the ice into the Mammoth's empty net for a goal.
 BY THE NUMBERS 
  • Amherst outshot Norwich 19-18. 
  • The Mammoths held the advantage with faceoffs, winning 34 out of the 61. Maeve Reynolds won 19 of the 27 she took. 
  • Amherst went 1-1 for power plays, whereas Norwich went 1-3. 
  • In net, Natalie Stott saved 15 of the 17 shots she faced on net.
