SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Amherst College women's swimming and diving team won every event in a dual meet at Union College, posting a 239-38 win on Saturday afternoon at Union's Alumni Gym Pool.
Sophomore
Paige Arnold won four events in the meet and senior
Ali Lacroix notched three victories to help the Mammoths improve to 3-1 with their third straight win in scored dual meets this season. The Garnet Chargers fell to 4-3 in dual meets.
The Mammoths, ranked 21st in the nation in the latest CSCAA Division III poll, return to action on Saturday, Jan. 11, hosting archrival Williams, ranked 9th in the nation, for a 1 p.m. dual meet that will decide the Little Three Championship.
MEET HIGHLIGHTS:
* Amherst kicked off the meet with a sweep of the top three spots in the 200-yard medley relay. The team of seniors
Cora Spelke and Lacroix and sophomores Arnold and
Lucy Smith led the way, finishing first with a time of 1:52.73.
* In sprint events, Spelke (28.62) and Lacroix (31.62) clinched first-place finishes in the 50-yard backstroke and breaststroke, respectively, while Arnold continued a stellar meet by winning both the 50-yard freestyle (25.47) and 100-yard freestyle (55.05).
* Arnold earned a fourth win in the meet by leading an Amherst podium sweep in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:12.64 while contesting the event for the first time this season.
* Lacroix won the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:31.28 has now won all 10 breaststroke events she has entered this season after sweeping the two events at Union.
* The Mammoths had another top-three sweep in the 200-yard freestyle with senior
Megan Lee winning the race in 2:01.12, her second win of the season in that event.
* Sophomore
Maeve Kelley led a top-three sweep for the Mammoths in the 200-yard butterfly, touching in 2:10.33 in her first collegiate start in that event.
* Amherst swept the podium in both diving events. Senior
Sydney Bluestein captured the top spots in the one-meter (295.80 points) and three-meter (292.05 points) diving events. Junior
Donna Zhang was second in both events and qualified for the NCAA Regionals with her season-best score of 286.27 on the three-meter board.
* First-year
Taryn Veronda led an Amherst podium sweep in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:12.38 to earn her first collegiate win in that event.
* Junior
Alexandra Zorn was victorious in an all-Amherst 500-yard freestyle, clocking in at 5:34.52 for her first win of the season.
* Senior
Katherine Hoffman was the first to finish as the Mammoths took the top four spots in the 50-yard butterfly, posting a time of 27.24 seconds for her first individual win of the season.
* In the final women's event, the 200-yard freestyle relay, Amherst's A relay team of Smith, first-years
Ava Liu and
Kaya Tray, and junior
Joline Fong capped the meet with a first-place finish in 1:43.86.
