Colby nabs victory over Mammoths in tight battle, 65-60

AMHERST, Mass. – The Amherst College women's basketball team fell to Colby College, 65-60, on Friday evening despite double-digit scoring from Kori Barach and Maya Cwalina

The Mammoths (14-5, 3-3) will face Bowdoin College in conference play at the LeFrak Gymnasium this Saturday at 3 p.m. 

GAME HIGHLIGHTS: 

* The Mammoths kicked off the game with a layup in the paint from Elizabeth Cain. The Mammoths and Mules went back and forth for the first five minutes of the game before Colby got a jump on the Mammoths with a seven-point run. Amherst responded with two successful free throws from Laura Mendell with one minute and 55 seconds remaining on the clock. The Mammoths concluded quarter one trailing the Mules by six points, 13-7. 

* Macie Nugent, Barach, Sylvia Liddle, and Reagan Pahl each contributed to the scoring scene, with Barach and Pahl each scoring three-pointers in the second quarter. Pahl's three-pointer tied the score for the Mammoths, 21-21, with one minute and 42 seconds remaining on the clock. Colby put one last layup on the board in the quarter's final minute, causing the Mammoths to enter halftime trailing by two points, 23-21.

* Amherst once again tied the score 27 seconds into the first quarter following a layup from Cain. Colby scored three consecutive shots to regain the lead, 30-26. Amherst responded with a four-point run following two successful free throws from Barach and a layup from Cwalina to tie the game, 30-30, with five minutes and 7 seconds remaining on the clock. Colby retook the lead, and the Mammoths again tied the game, 32-32. Colby got a jump on the Mammoths in the final three minutes of the game, with the score sitting at 42-37 at the end of quarter 3. 

* The Mammoths continued to battle, keeping the scoring margin within three points in the second half of the final quarter. In the last 41 seconds of the game, Amherst trailed by three points, 59-56, but Colby put together a string of shots to run away with the win. 

BY THE NUMBERS: 

* Barach and Cwalina scored 13 and 10 points, respectively, and grabbed 7 rebounds each. 

* The Mammoths had an 83.3% success rate on free throws, scoring 15/18 attempts.
