AMHERST, Mass. – The Amherst College women's basketball team fell to Bowdoin College, 65-54, on Saturday afternoon in the LeFrak Gymnasium despite double-digit scoring from
Laura Mendell and
Kori Barach.
The Mammoths (14-6, 3-4) will face Tufts University in conference play at the LeFrak Gymnasium next Friday at 7 p.m.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* Amherst got a jump on Bowdoin at the beginning of quarter one with a seven-point run beginning with a jumper from
Maya Cwalina. Mendell followed suit with a fastbreak layup in the paint and a free throw with six minutes and 58 seconds on the clock. Cwalina shot a layup in the paint to elevate the score to 9-2, Amherst. Bowdoin crept back up in the latter half of the first quarter with a series of shots. Quarter one ended with the Mammoths leading by three points, 10-13.
* Amherst kicked off the second quarter with an impressive seven-point run following a jumper and layup from
Macie Nugent and a layup and free throw from
Sylvia Liddle. Amherst had a 20-12 advantage with seven minutes and 41 seconds left in the second quarter. Bowdoin went on a high-scoring run in the minutes that followed that led the Mammoths to trail by eight points entering halftime, 34-26
* Amherst racked up 13 points in the third quarter, with Mendell, Cwalina, Barach, Liddle, and
Elizabeth Cain contributing to the scoring scene. Amherst exited the third quarter trailing Bowdoin by nine points, 48-39.
* Barach opened quarter four with an impressive layup in the paint. Mendell shot a layup and free throw with seven minutes and 47 seconds remaining on the clock to narrow the Polar Bear's lead to 50-44. Barach shot an impressive three-pointer with five minutes left on the clock and a layup less than a minute later. Despite the Mammoths' efforts and a late three-pointer from
Reagan Pahl, Amherst fell to Bowdoin in a 65-54 decision.
