Mammoths dispatch Jersey City, 67-55

AMHERST, Mass. – The Amherst College women's basketball team defeated New Jersey City University, 67-55, behind a 22-point game from Laura Mendell on Monday evening. 

The Mammoths (14-4, 3-2) will face Colby College in a home game at the LeFrak Gymnasium this Friday at 7 p.m. 

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

* The Mammoths kicked off the game with a six-point run behind layups from Mendell and Maya Cwalina. The Gothic Knights crept back up, briefly taking the lead from Amherst, 11-10, before the Mammoths began a seven-point run to regain control of the lead. Cwalina scored a jumper, Mendell scored a layup, and Annie McCarthy scored a three-pointer to send the Mammoths into the second quarter with a 17-11 advantage. 

* The Mammoths retained their lead for the entire second quarter despite the Gothic Knights getting within one point of the Mammoths with six minutes and 6 seconds on the clock. The Mammoths responded well with a three-pointer and layup from Mendell and a free throw and layup from Macie Nugent. The scoring streak was briefly broken up by a layup from the Gothic Knights before the Mammoths racked up four free throws. 

* Amherst opened quarter three with a 31-22 advantage. Maya Cwalina and Anna Tranum both put three-pointers on the board in the third quarter, while Barach, Mendell, and Sylvia Liddle also contributed to the scoring scene.

* Amherst and New Jersey City went back and forth for the first half of quarter four, but the Mammoths continued to play a strong offensive game, with Brielle Renwick, Barach, and Nugent putting points on the board in the final two minutes of the game. The Mammoths defeated the Gothic Knights in a 67-55 decision. 

BY THE NUMBERS:  

* Mendell racked up 22 points, while Cwalina and Barach scored in the double-digits with 13 and 12 points, respectively. 

* The Mammoths earned 45 rebounds, 33 of which were defensive.
