Mammoths fall at Trinity, 70-56

HARTFORD, CONN. – The Amherst College Women's basketball team fell to Trinity College in a 70-56 decision Friday night at the Ray Oosting Gymnasium despite strong offensive showings from Maya Cwalina and Laura Mendell

The Mammoths (11-3, 1-1) will face Wesleyan University in conference play at the Silloway Gymnasium in Middletown, Ct, Saturday at 3 p.m. 

GAME HIGHLIGHTS: 

* Cwalina put the first points on the board for the Mammoths in quarter one with a layup assisted by Sylvia Liddle. The Mammoths and Bantams went back and forth for the first four minutes of the game before the Bantams went on a nine-point run. The Mammoths trailed 4-13 before Kori Barach and Mendell scored on both of their respective free throw attempts at two minutes and 31 seconds and two minutes and two seconds, respectively. Barach shot a driving layup 20 seconds later to elevate the score to 10-13.

* The Mammoths entered quarter two trailing by three points, 15-12. Annie McCarthy shot two free throws to put the Mammoths within one point of the Bantams with nine minutes and 34 seconds on the clock. The Bantams retained the lead, putting four points on the board in the minute and a half that followed. Mendell shot a driving layup to narrow the scoring margin to two points. The Mammoths fell behind the Bantams by seven points with four minutes and 34 seconds remaining on the clock. Cwalina shot a layup that elevated the score to 26-21, Trinity. Her shot began a nine-point run for the Mammoths, with Barach shooting a three-pointer, Cwalina shooting a jumper, and Cain securing a layup to tie the score, 28-28. 

* The Bantams got away from the Mammoths at the end of quarter two, with the score sitting at 32-38 at the beginning of the second half. The Mammoths continued to battle, ceding 14 points while earning 11 in the third quarter. 

* With less than four minutes remaining in the game, the Mammoths began an impressive run, following a layup from Cwalina, a free throw from Liddle, and 3 successful free throws from Mendell. Despite the Mammoths' efforts, Trinity defeated Amherst, 56-70.

BY THE NUMBERS: 

* The Mammoths only scored 3-5 points less than the Bantams each quarter, with the difference in points being 3 in the first 3 quarters and 5 in the final quarter. 


* The Mammoths tied the game 4 times.
