NEW LONDON, CT. -- Two power-play goals from first-year
Cristobal Tola Friday night helped the Amherst College men's hockey team to a conference win over host Connecticut College at the Dayton Arena, 3-1.Â
The Mammoths improved to 7-5-1 overall and 4-3-1 in conference play, while the Camels slipped to 6-6-1 overall and 4-3-0 in conference play. Amherst will play Tufts on the road Saturday at 4 p.m.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* The Mammoths took a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal with 7:51 left in the opening period. Zach Jesse worked the puck around from the right to his left and sliding a pass to
Oliver Flynn, who found
Bobby Luca alone on the left side of the Connecticut net. Luca one-timed a pass to the center slot onto the blade of
Cristobal Tola, who in turn one-timed a shot into the lower right-hand corner of the goal for the one-goal advantage.Â
*Amherst nearly doubled its lead with a second man-up goal later in the frame, but
Andrew Carmody's shot from the left face-off circle was stopped by Camels' goaltender Will McAvoy.Â
* The second paced was fast paced with end-to-end hockey. Five minutes in, Flynn won a puck behind the Camels' goal and flung a pass out front in the slot to
Zachary Murray, whose point blank shot was denied by McAvoy.
* Connecticut College had a great chance to tie the game with a 2-on-1 opportunity mid-way through the period, but a sliding
Ben Cook broke up the chance for the Mammoths.Â
* Moments later
Josh Burke was sent in on a breakaway, but his shot hit the right post. The Camels collected the rebound and their ensuing rush turned into the game-tying goal with 8:29 remaining in the frame.Â
* With 4:12 left in the frame, a double-minor penalty was assessed to the Camels. Just nine seconds into that man-up opportunity, the Mammoths took advantage, with Luca throwing a shot on goal from the left point and Tola collecting the rebound and sliding it past McAvoy for a 2-1 lead.Â
* The shots on goal after two period were an even 22-21 with the edge going to Conn., but Amherst dominated the finale frame to the tune of a 15-3 advantage in shots. Still, neither team scored as
Connor Leslie made three saves and McAvoy 14. In the final minutes, Amherst was assessed a penalty and Conn. played a man-up. With the game dipping under a minute, the home team pulled McAvoy for a 6-on-4 advantage. That move backfired moments later when Murray collected a puck and skated into the Camels' zone, finding the empty net with 31 seconds left to clinch the victory with a short-handed goal.
BY THE NUMBERS:
* Leslie finished with 24 saves in goal for the Mammoths.Â
* Amherst finished 2 for 5 on the power play, while the Mammoths killed off all five Conn. College power plays in the game.Â
