Win streak snapped as #9 Williams tops #21 Amherst, 183-117, on Senior Day at Pratt Pool

AMHERST, Mass. – The Amherst College women's swimming and diving team fell to archrival Williams College, 183-117, on Saturday afternoon in Pratt Pool.

Prior to the meet, the Mammoths honored their eight seniors before they competed in Pratt Pool for the final time.

The Ephs, ranked ninth in the nation in the latest CSCAA Division III poll, remained undefeated in dual meets this season at 6-0, while the 21st-ranked Mammoths saw their dual-meet win streak snapped at three and fell to 3-2 this season.

Amherst returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 25, visiting NESCAC rival Connecticut College at 1 p.m.

MEET HIGHLIGHTS:

* Sophomore Maeve Kelley won two events for the Mammoths in the pool. She captured the 200-yard butterfly for the second straight meet with a personal-best time of 2:06.60, then won the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:05.00 for the reigning NESCAC champion in the event.

* Competing in Pratt Pool for the final time, senior Sydney Bluestein won the one-meter diving event with a season-best score of 314.91 points.

* Junior Donna Zhang won the diving competition on the three-meter board, posting a score of 265.27 points to finish just ahead of Bluestein.

* Sophomore Lucy Smith was victorious in the 50-yard freestyle, touching in 24.53 seconds. The reigning NESCAC champion in the event, Smith won her third straight start in the 50 free.

* Sophomore Paige Arnold touched first in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 57.81 seconds and has now won four straight starts in that event.

* The Mammoths closed the meet with a win in the 400-yard freestyle relay as Smith, junior Diane Koo, senior Megan Lee and Arnold clocked a time of 3:33.62, the top time for an Amherst quartet this season.

* Williams senior Sophia Verkleeren set a new Pratt Pool record in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:00.80, breaking the mark set by Amherst alum Brittany Sasser '08 that has stood for 17 years. Verkleeren also matched her pool record of 2:04.47 in the 200-yard individual medley that she set in this meet two years ago.
