Mammoths open season with road sweep at Hartford

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. -- The Amherst College volleyball team opened their 2024 season with a 3-0 sweep over the Hartford Hawks. The Mammoths held off the Hawks in the third set to finish 25-15, 25-17, 25-22 in their season opener. 

Amherst (1-0) heads to Providence, RI, where they will face the United States Coast Guard Academy and Johnson and Wales University in a double-header on Saturday, Sept. 7. 
Charlotte Rasmussen led the Mammoths with 9 kills. 

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS:

* The Mammoths jumped out to a 6-0 lead in set one, taking the lead on a block by Brielle Renwick and Sofia Camilo. Camilo had a solo block to make it 3-0 and Rasmussen registered back-to-back kills for a 5-0 advantage. The Mammoths led 10-3 when they reeled off eight consecutive points to bump their lead to 18-3. 

* Amherst trailed 3-0 and 5-1 in set two, but took their first lead at 9-8. The match was tied 14-14, but the Mammoths reeled off seven straight points to take a commanding 21-14 lead. Rasmussen had three kills during the decisive run while Tiana Richardson had one. 

* The third and decisive set was a back-and-forth affair that saw the Mammoths build 3, 4 and 5-point leads only to watch their hosts rally back to tie. Finally at 21-21, a service error and two Rasmussen kills gave Amherst a late three-point lead. A Kinsey Cronin kill off a nice set from Renee Liou provided the game-winning action. 

BY THE NUMBERS:

* The Mammoths tallied 36 digs in the match with Lizzie Papalia recording 12 and Renee Liou totaling 7. 

*Zosia Teraszkiewicz finished with 2 digs, 3 kills, 1 ace in her first collegiate match.*

*Cronin had 4 kills, 3 blocks, and 1 ace. Papalia tallied 2 aces, 1 assist, and 2 digs.
