Mammoths fall to Tufts on the road, 25-0

MEDFORD, Mass. -- The Tufts Jumbos scored 25 uncontested points Saturday at their own Zimman Field at Ellis Oval, breaking away from the Amherst College football team with a score of 25-0.

The Mammoths starting season streak fell to 2-1, while the Jumbos improved to 2-1. The Mammoths look to bounce back on home turf next Saturday, 10/5, at 1 p.m. for kick-off on Pratt Field at Lehrman Stadium.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* Amherst got off to a great start when  junior Luke Harmon intercepted a pass on the first drive of the game by Tufts. The Jumbos immediately bounced back with an interception by Will Duncanson on Amherst's own first drive of the game.

* A reception and 31-yard rush by Jack Elliott set Tufts up for a potential early touchdown, but a strong Mammoths defense forced a field goal instead, making the score 3-0 for the Jumbos.

* A defensive lockdown by both teams kept the rest of the first quarter quiet. Harmon had a crucial 3rd-down tackle on Tufts that forced a punt.

* In the very first play of the 2nd quarter, Jumbos QB Michael Berluti found WR Matt Rios for a 40-yard reception that put Tufts in the . Two 5-yard rushes gave the Jumbos the first touchdown of the game. A successful field goal brought the score to 10-0.

* The Mammoths then launched a strong counter-attack, with two sharp 3rd-down conversion receptions by Carter Jung and Sam Gerber from QB Mason Morrow. A promising drive was ruthlessly shutdown by the Jumbos defense when a crucial 4th down pass to Gerber was knocked away by Tufts' Jameer Alves.

* The Jumbos responded with another touchdown following a 19-yard reception by Cade Moore and a Berluti fake out and rush for 25 yards. A two-point conversion brought the score to 18-0 for Tufts.

* The start of the 2nd half only increased the Jumbo's lead. A starting Amherst drive culminated in a sack by Tufts and translated to a long scoring drive by the Jumbos with 3 first downs gained and the first touchdown reception of the game by Cade Moore. With a successful extra point, the score was 25-0.

* The remaining 3rd quarter was a back-and-forth with possession. A Tufts sack and turnover was quickly reversed after a huge hit by junior Miles Harmon caused a fumble picked up by junior Kevin Agnew. The Mammoth's turnover drive was promising, but a second interception by Tufts LB Duncanson turned the ball back to the Jumbos.

* At the end of the 3rd quarter, Sophomore QB John Collier led a promising drive with two dart receptions to Gerber that brought the Mammoths close to the red zone. The drive culminated at the start of the 4th quarter where a relentless Jumbos defense led to another 3rd-down interception.
