LEWISTON, Maine – The Amherst College volleyball team fell short in their first NESCAC match against Bates College. The Bobcats swept the Mammoths 3-0 (25-22, 25-23, 25-22).
The Mammoths fall to 8-1, while the Bobcats move to 5-2 on the season. The Mammoths will be back in action on Saturday, September 21st, as they face Tufts University in Medford, Mass, at 2 pm.
MATCH HIGHLIGHTS
* The Mammoths battled through the first set, keeping the score tied at 9-9 with kills from
Kinsey Cronin. The Mammoths won the next 6 out of 8 points to take the lead, 15-12, but an offensive spur from the Bobcats helped them advance to 23-22. The Bobcats won the set off a kill from Sofia Castiglioni, 25-22.
* The Bobcats took control at the beginning of the second set, leading 8-3. The Mammoths fought their way back into the set with back-to-back blocks by
Sofia Camilo and
Tiana Richardson, tying the score 13-13. Kills from Camilo and
Allie McLaughlin kept the Mammoths in the game, but the Bobcats came out on top, 25-23.
* The third set began with more back-and-forth play from the two teams as the set was tied, 10-10. The Bobcats gained the edge with a kill from Katie Kortekaas and never conceded the lead. The Mammoths stayed in it, with kills from McLaughlin and Cronin, but the Bobcats stayed strong and took the set, 25-22.
