AMHERST, MASS. – Junior Anna Aiello scored three times in the first half Wednesday evening, leading the 10th-ranked Amherst College field hockey team to a 4-0 victory over Western New England University at Hill Field.
Junior Justine Liguori had the other. goal for the Mammoths, who improved to 4-1 on the season. Amherst will host #1-ranked Middlebury Saturday at 11 a.m.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* A penalty corner was awarded to Amherst in the first quarter which enabled
Sam Maynard to fire a shot, getting the ball into the shooting circle and close to the goal. Aiello gained possession of the ball and scored the game's first goal and her first goal individually this season.
* The Mammoths offense had an incredible second quarter, scoring three goals despite only being awarded one penalty corner. Anna Aiello posted a hat trick after scoring two of the three goals in the quarter, with an assist from Caroline Busler. Justine Liguori had the other, following an assist from
Kate Smith.
* Mammoths were awarded 2 penalty corners and fired 3 shots in the third quarter, playing offense for most of the quarter and maintaining their 4-0 lead over the Golden Bears.
* The Mammoths continued to play aggressive offense in the fourth quarter, keeping the ball near the Golden Bear's goal for the majority of the quarter. The Mammoths fired 4 shots in the final quarter, and closed the game only allowing WNE to fire 1 shot across all four quarters.
