Lomo's Late Goal sends #2 Mammoths past Ephs, 1-0

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass – The 2nd ranked Amherst College women's soccer team clinched a 1-0 win against 20th ranked Williams College on Cole Field Saturday with a late goal from Jessica Lomo.

The win was the Mammoths fourth of the season as their record advanced to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the conference. Williams dropped to 1-2-1 overall and 1-1-1 in the NESCAC.

Next, the Mammoths will be at home vs Middlebury Saturday, September 21.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* The game opened with Amherst coming out as the stronger, more physical team and maintaining most of the possession in the first half. With Williams playing a high back line, the Mammoths were able to earn multiple good chances at goal after getting in behind. This said, the Mammoths were unable to find the back of the net.

* One notable performance was by senior Abby Schwartz, who worked up and down the sidelines for 77 minutes, spearheading many offensive chances for Amherst.

* To open the second half, Williams stepped onto the field with more energy than its first-half performance. A dangerous chance for Amherst came from sophomore Precious Novidzro who found the ball off of a pass in behind by senior captain Alyssa Huynh. Novidzro beat three defenders on the dribble before shooting just over the goal frame.

* With 7 minutes left to go in the match, senior captain Charlotte Huang found herself defending 1v1 against an Ephs forward. Effortlessly, she emerged victorious and played an early ball in behind for sophomore Jessica Lomo. Lomo outran her defender, caught the Williams keeper off her line, and sent the ball into the upper left corner to secure the Mammoth victory!

BY THE NUMBERS:

* The Mammoths and Ephs were tied for shots in the first half with eight each, but Amherst pulled ahead in the second half, shooting 9 times to Williams' 3 shots.

* The cornerkicks were 3-0 in favor of Amherst.

* Mika Fisher made four saves for Amherst in the win.
