Mammoths' D puts the clamps on the Bobcats, 19-7, in season-opening win

AMHERST, Mass. – Junior quarterback Mason Morrow led the Amherst College football team to a commanding 19-7 victory over the Bates Bobcats on Saturday, September 14 at Pratt Field at Lehrman Stadium, scoring two touchdowns. 

The Mammoths capitalized on big plays and key defensive stops throughout the game. 

Amherst will travel to face Hamilton College in Clinton, NY, on Saturday, September 21st, at 1 p.m.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

Amherst struck first as Matt Kelley opened the scoring with a 33-yard field goal, giving the Mammoths an early 3-0 lead. Placekicker Kelly set up his own field goal by recovering a fumble deep in Bates territory on his opening kick-off after teammate Price Warfield forced a fumble. 

Bates scored a touchdown early in the game to take a 7-3 lead, but its offense couldn't keep pace with Amherst's dominant performance. The Mammoths' defense held strong, preventing any further Bobcat drives from reaching the end zone.
  
In the second quarter, quarterback Morrow connected with Keith Delaney for a 44-yard pass, setting up his own 2-yard rushing touchdown that pushed Amherst ahead 9-7. 

Carter Jung electrified crowd at the start of the start of the second half with a 52-yard punt return, putting Amherst in prime field position. Shortly after, Amherst added to their lead, thanks to a mix of short-yardage gains and a key Jack Roberge 39-yard rush. Morrow capped the drive with a seven-yard touchdown run that came with 17 seconds left in the third quarter and made it 16-7 Mammoths. 

Amherst's defense held Bates to minimal gains early, with Luke Harmon leading the way with 12 tackles. A critical stop by Harmon on third down stifled one of Bates' best opportunities. He also had the only two Mammoth interceptions of the contest. 

BY THE NUMBERS:

Bates earned 15 first downs, outpacing Amherst's 9, but the Mammoths made the most of their opportunities with big plays.

Amherst outgained the Bobcats in total, 190-182. 
  
Morrow was efficient, throwing for key yardage and rushing for a 2-yard touchdown. He turned the game around with a big 44-yard connection to Delaney. Morrow finished 13 of 24 through the air for 140 yards, no touchdowns and no interceptions. He ran for five yards on six carries and the two touchdowns. 
  
Keith Delaney topped the receiving charts with 52 yards on 3 receptions, followed by Owen Gaydos with 33 yards on a trio of catches and Michael Quartermain adding 23 yards on 3 receptions

Jack Roberge showcased his running ability with a 39-yard gain, while Morrow added to the rushing attack with his 2-yard score.Amherst finished with 50 yards on 25 carries. 

Luke Harmon led Amherst with 12 tackles, 2 interceptions and the team's only sack. Sophomore linebacker Ty Kazanowsky had 10 tackles, 8 solo. Miles Harmon made 7 tackles, 4 solo. Jackson Duncan was credited with two quarterback hurries.
