MIDDLEBURY,
VT. -- Amherst rallied for three unanswered runs Friday afternoon at Forbes Field, earning a big 4-2 win over NESCAC West rival Middlebury and in turn earning head coach
J.P. Pyne his 300th career victory.
The Mammoths improved to 18-6 on the season, 5-2 in the NESCAC West Division. The Panthers fell to 18-8 overall, 4-3 in the NESCAC West. The two teams are back at Forbes Field tomorrow for a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
Pyne, in his sixth season at Amherst, had previous stops at St. Anselm's, Daniel Webster and Clark University.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* Amherst fell behind Middlebury 1-0 after one inning. The Mammoths leveled the score in the top of the second when
Tyler McCord singled to right, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scampered to third on a groundout and scored when
Jack Sampedro skipped an RBI-single through the right side.
* Middlebury scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fifth, but Amherst rallied to tie the game at 2-all with a run in the top of the sixth. With two outs,
Jack McDermott crushed a double to the left-center field wall.
Ryan McIntyre followed by lining a single left to score McDermott with the tying run.
* Sophomore
Tristan Kim had his best outing of the season, toiling 6 2/3 innings, allowing seven hits while walking two and striking out three. He was charged with two runs, only one earned.
* The Mammoths took the lead with two runs in the top of the eighth inning.
Charlie LaFreniere drew a lead-off walk and McCord followed with his second single of the game.
Jack Boyle dropped a down a perfect sacrifice bunt to move the runners to second and third with one out. Sampedro rolled a grounder to third. LaFreniere took off on contact and beat the throw home for a 3-2 lead. McDermott then rolled a grounder to second and beat the relay throw to first, allowing McCord to score for a 4-2 lead.

* In the home ninth, two Panthers reached base but Sampedro came through with two strikeouts and a groundout to end the game. Sampedro earned the win, going 2 1/3 innings and allowing no runs on two hits. He walked two and struck out five.
* McCord was 2 for 4 with two runs scored. McIntyre was 2 for 4 with an RBI.
