AMHERST, MA. – Five points each from
Kate Becker and
Mia Raven helped the No. 18-ranked Amherst College women's lacrosse team record their first win of 2024 on Wednesday, March 6. Taking on out-of-conference foe Roger Williams at home on Pratt Field, the Mammoths prevailed by a score of 20-11.
With the victory, the Mammoths improved to 1-1 this season, while Roger Williams dropped to 1-2. The Mammoths will hit the road for the first time this season to take on Hamilton on Saturday, March 9, looking to notch their first NESCAC win. The game against the Continentals is slated to begin at 12 p.m.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* The Mammoths opened the game strong once again: their first goal of the game came just coming just 1:19 into the contest courtesy of
Clara Sosa, who dodged past two defenders on the way to her first marker of the season. After the Hawks equalized on a free position-shot a few possessions later, the Mammoths got their second goal of the by way of Rachel Rodgers. The junior scored her second in two games on a face cut to the net, converting a beautiful feed from Becker to make it 2-1.
* Sosa widened the Mammoths' lead with her second tally, converting a catch-and-shoot opportunity off a pass from Raven before netting another with 2:47 to go in the first quarter. However, Roger Williams would score two of their own to bring the score to 4-3. It looked as though that would be the score heading into the second quarter, but
Bridget Finley's first goal of the season made it 5-3 at the horn.

Mary Gum and
Sofia Guttmann both netted their first goals of the season on blow-by moves to the net in the first three and half minutes of the second, widening the Amherst advantage to four. After two Roger Williams goals, Guttmann scored again shortly thereafter on a similar move, and Raven gave the home side a 9-5 lead just 60 seconds later.
* It was here that the Mammoths pulled away, going on a 5-1 run to end the half. Becker potted her first goal of the game unassisted after beating her defender to the inside and got her second after picking up a rebound from the Hawks' goalie and converting a wide-open look from close range. Goals by Raven, Guttmann, and Sosa closed the half with Amherst on top 14-6.
* The two teams traded tallies to open the second half:
Bridget Darcy matched the Hawks to keep the eight-goal advantage. Then, the Mammoths went on a 3-1 run the rest of the quarter. Becker scored just seconds later of a feed from Darcy and got her fourth of the game off a free-position shot immediately after. Raven also tallied to put the Mammoths up 18-8 going into the fourth.
* Fourth quarter goals from Gum and
Campbell Moriarty, and three from the Hawks accounted for the 20-11 final score line.
BY THE NUMBERS:
* Both Becker and Sosa finished with four goals in the the contest, while Guttmann and Raven finished with three each. Raven also notched two assist, and Becker one.
* Both
Jessye Salmon and
Caroline Stole saw action in between the pipes for Amherst, with Salmon making two saves and Stole three.

Grace Wyckoff lead the Mammoths in ground balls with four; Raven and
Ella Bobbett picked up three each.
