CLERMONT, Fla. -- In a rare tripleheader Thursday, the Amherst College softball team rebounded from a one-run loss in the opener to mercy-rule Union College 13-0 in five innings and rolling past Westminster (Mo.) College, 8-3.
The two wins improved the Mammoths' record to 3-6 on the season. They are scheduled to play Millikin University Friday at 1:45 p.m. on Field 3 of the Legends Way Complex.Â

* The nightcap of the tripleheader saw the Mammoths score five runs in the top of the first and that ultimately was the difference.Â
*
America Rangel got things started with a lead-off walk. After an out,
Sadie Pool singled to short. The pair pulled off a double steal but were still at second and third with two outs when Dani Torres Weera stepped to the dish and grounded an RBI-single up the middle.
Dylan Briggs then helped out her own cause with a soft liner to center for an RBI-single and a 2-0 lead. An error loaded the bases before first-year
Jenna Holmes then lined a single to center Torres Werra scored with ease but Briggs made it 4-0 when she expertly danced around the catcher's tag before sliding back into the plate from behind it. The final run came in on a bases loaded walk to Rangel, her second free pass of the inning.
* Briggs picked up her first win of the season from the circle, going the first five frames without allowing an earned run. She gave up five hits but did not walk a batter and fanned two.Â
*Â Pool went 3 for 4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored. Holmes was 2 for 2 with 2 walks, 2 RBI and 2 runs scored. Rangel was 1 for 2 with 3 RBI.
*
Amadis Castro saved a run in the bottom of the third. With a runner on third and two outs, the right-handed first baseman reached across her body to snare a frozen rope ticketed for right field to leave the runner stranded.Â
Amherst 13, Union (N.Y.) College, 5 Inn.
* It was scoreless after one inning, but the Mammoths exploded for six runs in the second, two in the third and five in the fourth to mercy-rule Union.
* Walks to Torres Werra and Finkelstein started the frame. After an out, Olivia Aitken ripped a single to left center scored Torres Werra for a 1-0 lead. Holmes grounded a single past shortstop that loaded the bases. With two outs, first year
Heidi Li came through with a two-run single to left center that made it 3-0. Two errors sandwiched around an
Emma Nordstrom single brought home the final three runs for a six-run Mammoth lead.Â
* In the fourth, singles by
Abby Moravek, Holmes and Rangel loaded the bases with two outs. A ball hit by Li was misplayed, allowing two runs to score.Â
* Five hits in the fourth led to five more runs to enact the eight-run mercy rule. Nordstrom led off the inning with a double.
Annalise Knop singled and an error on the play allowed Nordstrom to score. Finkelstein then single to score Knop. Rangel and Li later had RBI-single and Pool capped the outburst with a sacrifice fly.Â
* Torres Werra went the first three innings to earn the win. She gave up two hits while not walking a batter and striking out two to even her record at 2-2.
* Knop finished up with two scoreless innings in the circle.Â
* Li went 3 for 4 with 3 RBI. Holmes was 2 for 3 with 2 runs scored, Nordstrom 2 for 3 with 1 run scored. Rangel was 2 for 4 with an RBI.
Western New England 2, Amherst 1
* Golden Bear hurler Riley Kane was the story, holding the Mammoths to five hits and without a run until the seventh innings.Â
*
Abby Moravek and
Dani Torres Werra pitched for the Mammoths, each allowing a single run (Moravek's being unearned).
* Amherst trailed 2-0 entering the top of the seventh inning. Finkelstein started the rally by getting hit by a pitch and after an out, Briggs singled to center. An error loaded the bases and Rangel drew a one-out walk that scored Finkelstein to make it 2-1. Li hit a grounder to third that resulted in Briggs being forced out at home and finally, after a good battle between Pool and Kane, Pool flied out to right to end the game.Â
* Five different Mammoths had hits, all singles.Â
